I would use the term disappointment more than spite; as for how it went...

22 months in, with 18 chapters (almost 20! yay!) and about 35k words written.

As for how successful the story's been... well, at 35k words it's not much of a story so its hard to say :blob_teehee:

I wrote my first book, Let's Imagine a Female Knight From Another World because I couldn't find any decent female knight isekai stories that didn't involve her becoming some love-stricken fangirl for the MC.

After realizing that I can write pretty much whatever I want in any genre, I've stopped trying to find books that interest me altogether because, why bother - I can create the narrative myself, lol.

Any authors here who have written their story out of spite here? like you just took a good look at this site and see no stories match your taste so you just decided to make one of your own? how did it go?
I wrote my isekai series coz I'm dissatisfied with the lack of variety in isekai stories (mostly focusing on game-y elements, adventurer parties and dungeon diving).

So far, I'm done with the whole thing. Took me 20 books to finish, but I'm mulling to rewrite the ending and extend it to 21 books.

Most of my writing comes from challenging myself or accepting a challenge.

The opening paragraph for "Strange Awakening" was the result of a challenge on another site; don't remember the challenge any more but the paragraph stuck with me for months before I had a story to back it up, and even longer before I shared it anywhere.

Jack Diamond (Diamond in the Rough and, in the not-too-distant future, Blood Diamond) was born out of asking "Can I create a noir detective in a super-hero setting?"

Some other stories I have that I have not pushed out were:
"Can I write a romance novel?"
"I have seen Isekai/System stories set feudal Japan, dynastic China, and medieval Europe, could one be done as a Western?"
"Can a mummy be used in the same way vampires and werewolves are overused, and even Frankenstein's Monster has gotten into the act now (as a hero or romantic hero)?

So, not out of SPITE but out of a "what if/can I" question.

That's exactly what happened to me. I was trying to find a harem-leading non-beta MC without the plot being too dark, and couldn't find it. Decided to try it out myself. While my writing still has a ways to go (the first chapters rougher than toilet paper from the dollar store), I've enjoyed the journey so far.

I like gender bender, but most of the things I read really never hit the mark. They're still enjoyable, don't get me wrong. There's just more genre I want to see more of... so I writing mine now... And it's taking forever to even do it.... 150k words already...

I've written stories out of spite, but that was back in my college days. I need to see if I can find them.

Not exactly spite, but I have been annoyed at several aspects of stories I read, and now I have a story that doesn't have those. Still really need to improve at writing though, I still think I suck after three years.

IME, there are three types of writers: 1. Those who kind of want to but never try, 2. those who suck, and 3. those who believe they suck... :)
