I agree with Corty.

Besides, there are plenty of factors that identify some smol animals as insects. But of course, some things contradict those factors. Sad, I know.

Ok, except I said "Bug," and the other people are inserting the word "insect" into my mouth for some reason. You cannot change the words a person said in order to say therefore they are wrong.

Also, Corty has a huge vendetta against me for whatever reason, so you can't trust them on this one. Corty likes to randomly assert absolutely insane things, and I don't accept BS. So, they get fumming mad over it and start disagreeing with me just on principle, even when they are very obviously the one who's wrong on the subject.

@Corty I admit when I'm wrong. Key word, when I'm wrong. It happens quite often that I have to make such an admission. It just doesn't happen around you because you seriously do not seem to live in the world of reality. You live in the world of spiteful opposition and saying the opposite of whatever the other guy says, even when it's plainly obvious the opposite position is just way out in lala land.

EDIT: I decided to look up the definition. Turns out, yes, there is a scientific use of the term "bug." But there is also a colloquial use of the term. Just think back to when you were a kid and people called all little creepy crawlies "bugs." It was the general term people used.

Here's a link to the slang/colloquial term "bug" rather than the scientific term you'll find in the dictionary.

And true to my word, I will admit I was wrong for insisting it was NOT a scientific term. Because, it is. But it's also a colloquialism.

You will see in the very 1st definition of the colloquial "bug," it does typically refer to those that hold the characteristics of insects, the term "typically" also means not always. The very nature of a colloquial term means it's something that you can play fast and loose with the definition on and start making it encompass a lot of things that maybe other people wouldn't classify that way, and basically everyone has their own definition of the term.

If that's true, I'm next in line for the Malaysian throne.

That would certainly explain your attitude and the inability to stand the fact that you're wrong. I will add that you are the one who randomly came in here and started making this conversation ugly. This was a rather productive and reasonable conversation before you came in.

Amongst us, it is you who are doing exactly this. :blob_salute:
Scroll up. Also, I said it in somewhat subtle terms a moment ago, so I will make it more clear now. You are harrassing me. Next time I see you reply to me anywhere on the forum with a back-biting comment, I am reporting you for harassment.

Not insects, bugs. Spiders are not insects.

People who classify powers in the series try to claim she controls arthropods, which is a bit more inclusive than "insects," but that still doesn't quite cover everything she can control since she's also able to control worms and full-size crabs in the ocean, neither of which are classified as arthropods.

So, the most accurate description of what she's able to control is the fairly unscientific term "bugs."
Spiders and crabs are classified as arthropods, specifically "phylum Arthropoda."

But not worms. Worms are in the phylum Annelida. And she even expands this to the likes of parasitic worms, like tapeworms, pinworms, and heartworms.

Worms are the primary reason why I say "Arthropod" does not work as a definition and needs to be expanded to the colloquial use of the term "bug."

completely unrelated question: if she can control parasites, will she eventually be able to control bacteria or even viruses? I'd find it hilarious if she could give anyone who wrongs her in a minor way something like the common cold.

Lol, that would be hilarious.

The series never explores that, which would imply the answer is "no" since the reason she was able to discover her ability to sense parasitic worms was encountering a dog that had heartworm and I really cannot see her having never encountered a person with a cold since she got her power.

That said, it's also possible she did encounter such a thing but the narrator just didn't mention it. So, I guess we could say the door's open on that one and it's up to interpretation.

EDIT: I can add, the exact way powers work in this world is that they receive their powers from fragments of... what could be defined as reality parasites, and then these "parasites" limit their power in order to avoid destroying their hosts. The manner in which this power is limited is that the host only receives a specific portion of the parasite's power in accordance with their own interpretation of that power. The power is then additionally colored by the experience that awakens the power.

Taylor's interpretation of "Queen" (the name of the parasite she got) was "hive queen," and the experience that awakened her power was... well, to avoid spoilers, I'll just say "gross." So, she can control anything she, before receiving her power, would have defined as "gross" while also aligning to the concept of "hive queen," which winds up meaning anything and everything that's creepy and crawly, including worms and every conceivable kind of arthropod.

That said, knowing how the power acquisition process functions, and knowing what her trigger experience was that gave her that power, I actually think she should have the ability to control pathogens and it's a wonder it didn't come up in the series.

Dammit! @Jemini you were supposed to mention good fanfics!
Well, I don't READ fanfics. I've written one for Mother of Learning once, and apparently it's really high end for a fanfic for how well it adheres to the characters and looks as though it might as well have actually been written by the original author, but the comments I got on it actually scared me away even more from other fanfics as I was getting the kind of praise that actually makes me feel I shouldn't be getting such glowing reviews and it likely speaks to a dirth of quality elsewhere in the fanfic world.

@Jemini I actually agree with your point about bugs ≠ insects, but I think most people just really don't care.

Yeah. Unfortunately, it seems like a lot of people on the internet just don't understand what colloquialisms are.

Colloquialisms are real language, while dictionaries are an attempt by some people to keep up with the definitions that are constantly changing due to colloquialisms.

I was actually somewhat surprised to discover that "bug" now has a proper definition that narrowly defines it as particular varieties of insect. It's a case of their attempt to fit a definition to the particular kinds of "bugs" that have "bug" in their name.

But, to that, I have this question. What about pill bugs? Pill bugs are absolutely not insects.

Bug is a colloquialism, and trying to narrowly define it to apply to a particular kind of insect makes no sense and seems to breed more confusion than anything.

Pill bugs are land shrimp. Or at least they taste close enough to one another.

I thought you had a big worm fanfic that you wrote. I was wondering which one it was....

Nope. Only fanfic I've ever written was a currently incomplete stopped-short one I wrote for Mother of Learning.

I never finished it, but this one was pretty good as far as I read. WH40k + Worm. The Weaver Option

And for anyone who thinks controlling bugs doesn't sound that scary, you are mistaken due to the sheer scale. Spoiler warning, but this video is a good example of some of the shit she does - Skitter vs Mannequin - and this is against a foe practically none of her strategies work against due to being more an object than a living creature. Against living creatures, she is utterly horrifying. Think of how many venomous things she would be able to control, then imagine literally tens of thousands of them being used against a target at once. Even if you are wearing armor, there is a good chance at least a handful will find gaps, and even if you use a flamethrower, you can't surround yourself entirely with fire, so the swarm will reach you from above/below/behind.
