If a rating system was removed, how would the readers know which one's a good read and which one's not?

By reading the review?

I think you're confusing my plea for rating free stories as though they were monetized product with the genuine helpfulness of a well written review of a creative work.

That review just shouldn't be accompanied by something meant to rate something that creative work ISN'T (a product being sold, which I cannot stress enough, THE VAST MAJORITY OF STORIES ON SH AREN'T)

Most people are unwilling to leave a review due to the increased effort it takes, while a rating only takes a second or two, and thus is far more likely to be utilized.
