10k views, 250 readers, 12 chapters, 4.6 stars and finally, the cherry on top, a one star rating.

No review to go with it though, sadly.

How did you all feel when you got your first? Was it a moment of introspective enlightenment? Or perhaps something less cerebral, like a wet fart in a crowded room with headphones on?
I think it was either a cat walking over the keyboard or they really meant to give it to k5ratakan's story.

On a side note, while it is annoying, asking readers for reasons behind the 1* rating isn't a good practice. For one, ratings are incredibly subjective. If a reader felt to give 1*, they would do so, simply for the possibility that they just didn't understand the purpose of the chapter (which you intend to reveal later on).

Second, readers also have a certain bias on everything, as is each and every human alive.

Third, they can also be a troll, out to grief someone because it's how they breathe.

And there's also that angle of 'you can't force them to give reasons, because they will just rate at a score then can do without reasons', further throwing the purpose of ratings out the window.

The site can do away with ratings system, though it won't happen any time soon. Replace it with HoneyFeed's system of just giving likes to the story. Or they can implement the WN system, where you can edit and delete reviews, which is extremely subjective on the side of authors. It won't happen here too.

Any case, as authors, we have to be prepared for the possibility of receiving unreasonable ratings to our works. They can't help it; some of them think of one thing, and a few look at themselves as connoisseurs and/or 'cool'. Best thing to do with this is to tweak your settings to avoid receiving comments notifs, or revs, but that's it. If you really hate the idea of receiving a low rating, there are other writing sites similar to SH. You might flourish there.

Toughen up, if you want to stay in this hobby.

Now don't tell me I shouldn't say that because my works haven't received 1*; I've been in SH since 2020 (in a different account), and I've deleted my works before with lots of 1* in an attempt to deny the reality. But in the end, I learned to accept it...or maybe I also toughened up myself.

I got a one-star rating on one of my books (Waters of the Kalahari). It was deserved. I was deep into a series and moving right along. Didn't take the time to revise. I left the book on Scribblehub thinking I would get back to it. But it was months later. Too long to leave bad writing out in public.

I don't think any of that applies to you. Given all your eyeballs, you are definitely doing good work. If you are comfortable with what you have posted, I would ignore that star and just keep moving along.

I wear my one star like a badge of honor. If someone disliked it enough to put the effort into rating Im doing something right. Or very wrong.

Most one star ratings come from readers who are pissy about something. It's an emotional reaction more than half the time, which is fine. If you piss them off, that's a matter of taste, not skill.

I think it is more likely to be a troll than anything else normally. Especially the case if you don't get any other lower star ratings. I just consider it proof that I'm "a real writer" since someone bothered to troll me, which means I had to be visible to some degree. Alternatively, you can think of it as someone is so worked up about your story that they can't just leave, which means you are important to them in a way.

You're late to the party, my guy.

You're also late but, that's a nice opinion you got there bud.

Also, can I get a moment of applause because even a month after this someone still reacted to my comments? I'm looking at you, @Tyranomaster

You commented the thread, which put it to the top of the forums. I then read and reacted to people. Stop being purposefully stupid.
Oh wait, you're that guy.

Whoops, sorry. :D

None of the fics that had them still exist, but I replied to a different post with the same point I'm going to make here.

I am not selling a product. If I am not selling a product, a system that is only capable of promoting or demoting a product categorically should not apply to what I write. Authors should have the option to prevent reviewers from using star ratings at all with an accompanying tag on the fic that it is not monetized in any way.

My apologies, I just checked your profile, and you're just a kid who doesn't understand anything. Have a good day.
No need to, big guy. It was reminiscent of my stupidity.

I mean, I didn't realize my mistake back then. So it's a sorry from me.
Don't practice necromancy kids
Dunno if I'll stop tho... :blob_hide:
I give you a five star rating. It doesn't make up the "unnecessary" one star but its better than nothing.
Hey, there's no one star rating anymore on these novels. It's gone.

Oh, also, I do hope you gave him five stars after reading his novels. It's a little dull for me, more like his book's not my taste.

Then, how do we (as readers) know if a story of a genre is good? I often look up the genres I want and pick between those with good ratings and reviews. Then, I read them all and put a review halfway through the novel.

If a rating system was removed, how would the readers know which one's a good read and which one's not? Do we base it on views? Or should most rating systems owned by many sites follow the rating system AO3 runs which is the Kudos?
