Nothing is pirated, right? How do I prevent pirates from stealing my story?

All stories hosted here go through a review process, and if you believe that a story is stolen you can report as such and provide evidence.

As far as preventing pirates from stealing your story, you don't. That's going to happen at some point no matter what you do. My story has an illicit Russian and Chinese translation that I'm aware of. I consider it a sign that I've passed a certain point with my community.

With the bigger sites, they usually have a system where you can report a stolen story and provide the admins proof that it was, but for foreign sites (especially Russian and Chinese ones), you're sol.

I suppose you could try sending a DMCA claim against the host of the pirated copy, but the chances of that actually accomplishing something amount to basically fuck all.

If you're going to post your work online, assume it will get stolen at some point. Simple as

My story was pirated by some sites, though they chopped the arcs. For example, [aggregator] got Arc 1. A Vietnamese site has Arc 2, and I'm still waiting for Arc 3 to be pirated.

As for trying to prevent piracy of your works, either you don't upload it, or sue the company who uploaded the works. Like @Psycholor said, 99% of it would end with no action taken at all.

I think the only version they can't pirate on my work is the one with illustrations.

...why? What does adding some pictures to the story do that stops them from copy-pasting it? Or is this supposed to be an NFT joke?
Nah, really, I'm serious. I haven't found a pirated version of my work with in-chapter illustration. It's always the non-illustrated ones. I don't know the reason though.

Perhaps @greyblob's explanation could shed a light on this.

Yea, @greyblob's explanation makes sense. I guess I was just thinking of how it would only take a couple of lines to make the bot ignore images and only scrape the text. That tracks though; people who would steal a story are the same ones who would be too lazy to go to any real effort when making their scrapper bots.

pretty much as @Psycholor said

I doubt any sweatshop chiniese programmer is going to take the time to troubleshoot. that doesn't stop other (slightly more improved) bots from scraping it though. I mean, webnovel has removed the text from the source code completely and it's still getting scraped

Well, you know as they say, "Imitation is the best form of flattery".

In our case, "piracy is the best flattery". Since we cannot stop it, let's just take comfort at the fact that they noticed our works enough to pirate it.

After all, we still got the rights to it.
Only got a few chapters posted. Posted here, no aggregate pickup. Posted on royal road, suddenly the aggregates got the chapters up. Safer here I'd say, probably not tracked by automated systems.
There's an aggregator here that picked up my (former) chapters, though it vanished when I deleted my story in this site.

So start drawing for all your chapters?

Nah, why would I, when I own the rights to my work anyway?

Besides, I'm not planning to monetize it. It's freely available online for anyone interested, including those who pay for my chapters in some aggregators.

Also, the reason why I dipped my foot in novel writing is to avoid grinding my days on doing comic illustrations. Isn't that ironic that I draw every scene in my novel just to try preventing piracy?

Yes, this site is legit. No, it will not stop your story from getting pirated.

Any story posted on the internet can simply be copied by another person accessing this site (or any other site that has your story for that matter) and pasting it under their name.

If you truly value your story and have concerns about it being pirated don't post it online. And don't publish it online if you plan one day to traditionally publish it as there may be some difficulties from publishers accepting it, since its already been "published" on the web.

Pictures don’t prevent stealing. My chapters get ripped of even with several illustrations in one chapter.
The only way to prevent stealing is not posting or being unpopular :blob_neutral:
