No, smut isn't filtered, and there is no connection between newness, statistics, and being shown on NU. Right now, it's absolutely random.
No they are not, at least when I checked right now. The 3 suggestions are refreshed about every 30min, and right now they are literally the 3 picks from 24min ago, 27 and 30-sth.

I guess I didn't phrase it well enough. Yes, stories on the NU sidebar are from the latest updates. The question is, how are they chosen? Sometimes, the stories on the sidebar are there for a couple of minutes. While sometimes, they are there for an hour or so. How are they chosen? The keywords you said were: "I checked right now". I monitored this for a couple of days as I couldn't understand what happened and why. There is no connection with views, tags, readers, favorites, etc. All of them are from the latest updates, yes. Yet why some story is on the sidebar for an hour, despite the fact that there is a constant influx of new chapters of other stories. While the other story either isn't there at all or put on the sidebar for a few minutes? A month ago, ALL stories would appear there. I mean all. Unless there was a very big influx, you would get some time there. Right now it's not like this anymore.

I've seen series skipped before. Every single time I've looked at the skipped series, it had "sexual content" in the contents warning box. That label in particular.

I've never noticed something with "Smut," "Adult," or "R-18" tags in isolation being skipped, but that might just be because they just about never appear without a "sexual content" warning to go with them.

Yep, I was referring to your thread. However, my problem didn't get resolved, and my story still doesn't show up on the NU sidebar. The thing is, perhaps it's a new feature and not a bug? That's the whole point of this thread. Maybe someone knows something. But so far, there was no info. Only speculations. And somehow, those authors that are missing their appearance on NU don't care.
My story never got listed there, so I just assumed it got changed so that only certain stories would be displayed. I'd noticed that all of the stories chosen had 'interesting' thumbnails with titles stitched on (That isn't the problem though, since some stories with titles are being skipped as well). I just ignored it because I didn't care, like you said.

I've definitely seen stories with 'Sexual Content' listed on it, so that's not the problem. I could try removing that tag from my story since I don't actually have any.

The other thing I can think of is if you changed the title or thumbnail, maybe it doesn't like that.

There was a story with Sexual Content on the list when I started reading this post. It was replaced by a popular story, skipping over 4 other stories, while I was looking.
1 of the skipped stories had 10k views, while one of the listed had 2k, so it isn't views either.
It's not ratings either. The 2k story had 4 ratings, two 1 stars and two 5 stars. One of the skipped had four 5stars.

Hmm. It changed again. Seems like it happens at specific timings. However, it skipped at least four more stories, with one of the ones that was chosen being a genre I had filtered out. Reminding me that some stories may have been skipped without me noticing.

And now, again, I ask the same question I have asked 3 times and you have not answered even once. How often are you refreshing the page over on Novel Updates?

About once every thirty seconds? Is that relevant somehow?

Since I got reminded, I watched it for 20 minutes, and it skipped 3 stories(none of which had Sexual Content). The one it added was not the latest release either.

Edit: Oh my god, I am never doing screenshots again. It's such a fucking hassle.

I now understand that it was a huge mistake not to take screenshots. I don't understand why you continue not believing what I say. I mean, I have some theory why some authors won't like this being discussed, but it's not like I'm asking to change this whole thing, right? Look into the novel: They Feed At Night that is being on the NU sidebar. Look at the tags and content warnings. Look at the number of readers and views. Look at the time they were updated. It's not a ten-minute rule, nor it's a half an hour rule. It's random. And this is ONE example. If you will continue to deny that you were mistaken, I don't think we should continue our conversation. because I don't have time to make screenshots for a single person from the forum. Unless it's one of the staff asking for help.

I honestly don't care if it's a new feature. The thing is, I simply want some clarity. I want to understand did I or did not miss some info source of SH. If this is a feature, I have no qualms. I don't need to know how to get there. I want to understand where I can see if this is a feature. That's it. If this is a bug, ok. I don't need this fixed right here and right now. Am I asking too much? Is answering a question if this is a new feature or a bug too much?

As for changing the title and other stuff, I haven't changed a thing. And I don't think that ALL those novels that were skipped have been changing their titles, thumbnails, synopsis, etc. Some of them might've done it, but not all of them.

Dude, conspiratorial much? I am trying to get all the facts, which you were self-admittedly not providing. 1. you were not saying how often you were refreshing. If you were refreshing every half hour, then of course some series would be skipped. You, self-admittedly, were also not providing screen-shots.

I am not sure if you have ever worked in IT, but the rule in IT when you are trying to diagnose a problem with a piece of technology is #1, always check your connections. As in, see if the device is actually plugged in or not. In other words, try to rule out all the simple solutions before you go off believing it's a huge complex problem.

Now you actually are providing some evidence to back up your claims. You've provided things that people can go in and check for validity. So, good job, you have finally backed up your claim and it's no longer just your word here.

Now, considering your conspiratorial tone you were using up there, I am going to offer another potential simple solution. This time to what might be the reason why the problem is still not fixed. You did not provide a screen shot when reporting the problem. So, how about trying to report it as a bug again, this time posting that screen-shot along with it?

You shouldn't under-estimate how difficult coding can be. You need to give a coder like Tony all the information they need to work from. Otherwise they might just wind up wasting their time looking for a bug they don't even know where to begin looking into it for.

I provided a screenshot when I reported this problem, and I wasn't the only one with such a problem. There are two threads, each having one screenshot. I stated multiple times that there is a thread made by me in bug reports. Yet you, as you tried to gather the facts, didn't bother checking it. And there is no conspiration. I don't know what you are talking about, nor why you are using such a condescending tone. Yes, I thought that there is no need to provide proof as this isn't the problem only I have. I have no malicious intentions, I asked a question. And yes, I don't know how difficult coding is. But all I asked is an answer to the question. I didn't ask to fix it if this is indeed a bug.

I've never worked in IT, and I'm a dumbass. It's not something I'm afraid of admitting. So, when I see for a month, how a lot of novels aren't being shown, yet there is zero response, like absolutely zero, what should I do? I asked a question, as I'm a dumbass. And what do I have as an answer? Accusations of some conspirational theories and telling me to refresh the page. :blob_unsure:

And yes, I answered you about refreshing the page yesterday, yet you tried to gather the facts, so probably, you didn't bother checking this out.

Oh hey! That's me...

Anyway, I think it is slightly bugged, or there are random exclusions we aren't aware of. Like when I saw three different novels uploaded by an author, but only the first one showed up. So maybe there is also an exclusion factor on the author to prevent spamming?

I know for sure that if the novel doesn't have a cover, it doesn't get shown.

Some novels get skipped that shouldn't be skipped. Could be poor timing? Or is there a word in the synopsis or title that gets filtered out?

I do think the intent is to filter out adult content, and when it's bugging, some content go through when it shouldn't have.

Yes, there is a lot of questions. The whole point of this thread is to get an answer. Is this a bug or not? And I don't think there is an exclusion of authors. Currently, there is a novel that has chapters being dished out every couple of hours. Every time it shows up on the NU sidebar. As for sexual content, I don't know. I saw a lot of novels with sexual content on the NU sidebar.
For those who don't believe me that 'sexual content' isn't filtered out. Three different stories with sexual content, each having a different number of views and readers.

Wow. Calm the **** down! Seriously! You are providing new information once again. The facts of the matter are, 1. You come in here stating that something is a problem. 2. I personally saw no evidence of this problem in my own experiences and there were viable alternate explanations based on my observations going back a while here. So, I offered those as possibilities. 3. You offered some statements to the contrary. 4. I started taking you seriously and asking for the information that you didn't provide in your facts to the contrary.

Now, moving on here, how much time do you think people have in their day to dedicate to things like this? I am not obligated to go about doing your leg-work when you are the person coming forward with a problem. In cases like these, if you want to complain about a problem, you are unfortunately obligated to provide all the facts yourself to every single new person who is exposed to the facts. The fact that you started a separate thread means nobody in this thread is obligated to check the back-data and history of this issue. As the person who started this thread, that is what YOU are responsible for.

It is unfortunate, but that is the way this world works. There are new people in here, and you have to freshly expose all the new people to the facts all over again. You may find it annoying, but that is simply the way the real world works.

As for the condescending tone, that would be because you are acting quite irrational right now. 1st you accuse me of having some malevolent intent for trying to get all the facts and not just accepting everything you say at face value and searching for alternate explanations. (Or, in this case, testing these alternate explanations to be ruled out before fully going with the one remaining answer, which is that the problem you are proposing is exactly as you say it is.) You accusing me, and in a manner that implies I'm one of many, is you holding "conspiracy theories" about some malevolent group of authors on this board. That is you being conspiratorial.

This behavior is completely irrational and unrealistic. I think I'm well within my rights to take the tone I am taking considering what is in front of me. Perhaps if you want your problems addressed, you should attempt to keep more of a cool head and approach the issue rationally rather than assuming the men in black coats are out to get you.

Just look at how you are behaving now. Once again, you tried to draw up a crazy victim narrative for yourself while painting me as somehow being obligated to automatically believe you or that I am responsible for doing your leg-work somehow. You are quite frankly behaving like a child. So, I would strongly recommend taking a breather and cooling your head for a moment.

1. I didn't accuse you of malevolent intent for trying to get all the facts. I said that you aren't looking for the said facts. You stated yourself:
"you were not saying how often you were refreshing. If you were refreshing every half hour, then of course some series would be skipped." Then you stated: "3. You offered some statements to the contrary. 4. I started taking you seriously and asking for the information that you didn't provide in your facts to the contrary." Which is false. I answered this very question in the beginning. You asked it two times. I answered your second question. How should I react to this and keep my head cool, if I gave you an answer in this very thread, and you didn't look at it?

2. I didn't imply anything about conspiracy theories either. Nor did I say that there are 'malevolent' authors. My English is shit, so perhaps that was the case? I said some people might choose not to talk about this problem. If not talking about this is a 'malevolent' action, okay. As for why I thought about this. Those who are shown on the NU sidebar for a long time gain a lot of views. They are getting boosted significantly. We as well, don't know if being on the NU sidebar helps with getting to trending. Via increase of views, increase of referrers from the web and so on. IF this is a bug, they are directly benefiting from it. I that some of them might want to keep things as they are. I didn't say all authors, nor did I accuse you of it. I said: "some authors." I'm not talking as this is a fact either. That's why I said theory, but perhaps I chose the wrong word there? Once again, my English is shit.

3. I didn't try to make victim narration. My English is shit, so perhaps that's what made you think like that. Though, I did feel bitter from all our bantering. Because: see point 1. You are clearly in wrong, ignoring my answer, yet you are using a condescending tone. You as well started talking to me in a condescending tone without checking anything. You believed that I made a bug report without a screenshot. I know that you acted with the best intentions. However, you chose not to believe a single thing I was right about. From the get-go, you thought of me as someone who has lower mental capabilities than you. Yeah, I will feel bitter about this. Perhaps I'm wrong here, and I saw things not the way they are? Just like you did? I don't know, maybe.
Also, I believe, that doing few clicks to see my thread isn't such troublesome legwork. I was wrong about this particular point, which I can admit.

4. Lastly, I didn't come here to fight you. I have no qualms with you. I came here to gain an answer. A simple answer, consisting of a few words. My bug report, which had a screenshot on it when I was posting it, was ignored for a month. I started this thread after waiting for a month as nothing happened nor changed. In the attached screenshot, you can see something peculiar. In the beginning, there was no conflict, no bitterness, no nothing. I answered you calmly. I, as well, showed that my English is shit in this screenshot. I didn't understand your question at first and answered it secondarily.

You are clearly in the wrong here, and have been since long before this argument started. Stop being a dick.
Lastly, I didn't come here to fight you. I have no qualms with you
Please make this the last response to this particular argument. You've done the best you can. Any more would just be wasting energy.

For those who don't believe that novel can be shown on the NU sidebar for longer than half an hour. And the second screenshot is of one of the stories that were skipped. There was no sexual content or tags worth excluding. It's one of the many stories like that. Stories that are being skipped, don't necessarily have few views either. I didn't screenshot all of them as it would literally take all of my time.

3rd parties who feel like they need to chip in their 2 cents are the real people who are in the wrong.

There seems to have been a language related misunderstanding. He said something that made it sound like he was making a disparaging remark at me for not automatically accepting everything he says at face value, and I was just trying to ask some reasonable questions and felt he'd stepped over the line with his comment.

His behavior can be excused by language issues and the emotional state he was probably in from dealing with this problem for longer than just the span of this thread. You, however, cannot be excused for coming into this and talking on issues you have no grounds to speak on. You are the one being an ass here in this situation.

I was of a mind to just let the subject drop with the language barrier comments made in @SailusGebel's last post, but here you are just stirring things up all over again with your unwelcome commentary.

You have obviously never had a girlfriend, or even siblings, if you don't know how horribly bad of an idea it is to do exactly what you just did. If you do have either of those things, then there must be an awful lot of yelling in your life.

Another batch of screenshots. This time a story is shown for an hour. And another story with sexual content being shown.
Okay, this is the last batch of screenshots. And here is the reason behind my 'conspiracy theory'. It's speculation. I don't know, nor am I 100% sure this has some connections. But, there is a random chance that this IS connected. That's why I think some people might not want to talk about it. On the odd chance, this is a bug. As people are directly profiting from it, they won't necessarily talk about it. Let's say there is no connection to trending. They still get a lot of views, so being on the NU sidebar is a profit. And it's unfair(if it's a bug). Once again, it's a speculation, a guess, an assumption. I'm not accusing anyone. Let's say this is a new feature, and novels are chosen randomly, or there are complex criteria. I am okay with it. I just want an answer. Is it a bug or a new feature?

And now, again, I ask the same question I have asked 3 times and you have not answered even once. How often are you refreshing the page over on Novel Updates?
You're the one who involved me. You misunderstood the intent of the entire thread, formed your own biased opinions on the subject, and then ranted at anyone who didn't fit those opinions. Now go have your meltdown somewhere else, unless you intend to provide some more evidence of the skipped chapters.
