I've seen a lot of opinions from both sides, but honestly I think the ending was bad.

The argument "But he DID become the greatest hero", at least to me, is complete bullshit. He became the greatest hero for maybe a few years, arguably not even that. The fact he was the greatest hero for a while doesn't change the fact he lost his powers. Sure, he took up teaching and he's remembered as the greatest hero that defeated AFO, but a huge part of the community, me included, expected him to become a symbol and hero akin to Allmight. That did NOT happen.

There's uncountable ways to resolve everything without making Deku lose his powers, and it honestly feels like the author is slapping people's faces with the fact he's still quirkless. That despite all his achievements, he's not going to stay the greatest hero because all he did was use a borrowed power.

Doesn't help that the suit he receives at the very end is a gift he took no part in creating.

I think it was a bit of a cop out, and the power suit was kind of BS (although it would make sense that they'd give it to him), but I think that him being a hero by being a teacher shows growth from the beginning when he was told he could be a hero by joining the police but he refused to accept that. Also, showing how someone can be a hero on a smaller scale even without powers is a lot better than showing that someone can be a superhero on a massive scale if they just get lucky enough to be given the world's greatest power from the world's greatest hero.

I mean, you raise a good point but I still think we got the best ending that we could if we take into account how Horikoshi has been writing the story.
While I am happy with the fact that he gets to be a hero by the end of the chapter despite his lack of a quirk, the way he gets to be a hero could have been written in a better manner. I believe that Izuku could have at least been a professional hero (albeit without being a top ranking hero) by using some custom made support items while also teaching the next generation of heroes how to do their jobs until the suit was given to him.
