I despise TikTok, but I hate censorship even more.
It's hard for me to express this, but we can't claim to stand for freedom of expression only on selective days.
So, in this case, I'm against the ban, even if reluctantly.

Are youtube shorts any different? Just curious on this whole tiktok thing coz I haven't been using social media since covid. I genuinely thought it was just like Vine?
YouTube doesn't send private information to the Chinese gov, read this message.
I'm pro-ban. 3 reasons.

1.There's already been a study on it showing it censors anything that makes the CCP look bad. While pushing pro CCP propaganda. It censors Tibet and Taiwan as examples.

2. Any company larger than 50 people is required to have a CCP branch in it. And if the company has stocks, the CCP has around 20% ownership, and requires CCP members on the board.

3. Security. It's been proven that tiktok keylogs any key presses while the app runs. The gov banned it on gov employee phones for this reason.

I love that the Israel lobby can bribe all our politicians to ban tiktok because it was seen as being too pro Palestine. Once again democracy is working as intended.
Ah yes, ignore the fact that Trump wanted tiktok banned 5-6 years ago. And during Biden's presidency tiktok was banned on government phones as well. Both of which happened before Israel-Palestine went hot. Instead, insert an outside argument to distract from the solid reasons of security, censorship, and propaganda, to ban it.

Don't get me wrong, FB, twitter, bluesky, etc are also guilty of censorship and running propaganda for money.

It's known both Israel and China have and are, paying off news media, and politicians to push their propaganda. Everyone and their mom can buy off the media and politicians in most any country for a high enough price. I mean, HOW ELSE COULD THE WORLD THINK ADDING LEAD TO GASOLINE WAS A GOOD THING FOR DECADES.

So what's the difference you may ask? Tiktok is the only one with a know active keylogger.

Never used Tiktok, but I don't really believe the US will ban it. Wasn't Donald Trump making billions of views Tiktoks?

What the governments should do isn't banning social media, but make effing media literacy mandatory. But the murricans wouldn't want that since it would undermine their own efforts of feeding people shit.

Ban social media until people are legal adults (meaning they gotta stand up for their own shit), let them solve a media literacy test, and only then should they be allowed to wander into the shitfest that is Twitter, Insta, Facebook, and co.

Ya know, I agree with your take. The U.S has been slashing education for years now. Right now, people struggle with basic math and reading.

You could put up a clear sign at a fast food place, and they still can’t read it properly. I ain’t joking, seen it a lot with my own eyes.

Media literacy is another thing, with the modern day world. It is necessary to know these things.

I don’t think a ban is the right move, the issue is what happens internally. Educating the U.S would solve the problem, not entirely. Though, to the point where misinformation isn’t gonna be much of a problem.

Plus, when TikTok goes, another platform will open and it won’t solve the issue. There is still FB, YouTube, etc. They won’t solve any issues by banning TikTok, they have to work on the U.S intelligence.

Normally I'd be against banning anything. This includes weapons, drugs... etc.
However... I don't really want to feel anything about this.
Reason I don't want to feel anything is because I just don't care.

If anything, I do think that TikTok should be forced to disclose that all your information goes to CCP every time you use it. That would be a fair compromise so that people who use it will always be reminded what they post goes to CCP in full disclosure.

Other than that, I don't really care whether it's banned.

Okay, so you just disproved yourself. Both Trump and Biden couldn't ban tiktok, but as soon as it was "anti-semitic" it got banned. Israel pretty much always gets priority when it comes to our government. The Israel lobby literally has offices in every single congressional district. China's influence doesn't even come close.

Biden wasn't trying to ban public use of tiktok. And neither is Trump really. Both parties are using the potential ban as a political tool. Cause the gov doesn't care if the lesser folk get keylogged by a foreign entity as long as they get benefits.

I think the usa government is really trying too hard to control people when it comes to information, which is definitely a big failure considering the people of this century aren't idiots especially now in the era of internet, who says most of apps, websites or others whatnot illegal forums don't share your data and privacy.
In this case, not really - though the TikTok situation feels like a case of burning down the barn after the cows escaped through the door they forgot to close a few years ago.

Doesn't matter, even if they ban it.
There are so many alternatives to tiktok and so many social media apps have adopted the "scrolling" system: Facebook, YouTube shorts, Instagram reels, fuck, even Snapchat. I saw literal porn sites that use the tiktok model of short form videos. Scrolling through tiktok I heard of a Chinese app called Red Note and it seems like everyone wants to migrate there. The users are not going to disappear, they will just migrate somewhere else and that will be the new "tiktok" for American audiences.
Me personally? The tiktok ban sounds suspicious to me, I don't necessarily use it, but governments banning social media? Big no no, why don't they ban Facebook? Notorious for stealing your data. It's only a political thing, nothing more, that's why I don't agree.
For the app, I honestly expected a ban in the US soon, they were already edging it last year with biden in government, it was just delayed.
