Your opinion as readers on non-binary mc in an action story

In my opinion, the story would be fine if the author didn't tag sexuality. Without that, it would be suitable (for the story) and right for the protagonist. It can be respectful to the identity. The protagonist's gender-fluidity can be unique and approachable to both genders, receiving story integration and confronting representation. I can't dislike such a tag or genre that exists as well.

I have a story where one of the MCs is non-binary (but it's not a shounen action story). It's definitely the least well performing of my works, which is a shame because it's my favourite.
Perhaps that would be different for a story in a different genre.

Honestly, it depends on the story itself~

Also, I need to correct you on a few things.
I am talking about the case where the mc is

(1) a hermaphrodite (having reproductive organs of both sexes) or

(2) is lacking genitals and mammary glands.
What you have described here are NOT nonbinary people. What you described is intersex. Nonbinary is a descriptor of gender identity which is not linked to sexual characteristics at all. You can have a nonbinary person with either sex’s genitals (or something else entirely). Conversely, you can have an intersex person who uses standard he/him or she/her.

What are your thought on an action battle shounen series that has the protagonist that is neither male or female?

I am talking about the case where the mc is

(1) a hermaphrodite (having reproductive organs of both sexes) or

(2) is lacking genitals and mammary glands.

What is your opinion? Do you prefer an action protag with traditional sex instead (either male or female)?

Do you dislike a protag with such special trait?

In case you were asking "why does the protag in such a battle series have either both genital types or neither of them?"

The answer is it makes more sense for the mc to be neither male or female because of their background lore and this background lore is important to the story and cannot be compromised. This trait is the tool for the mc and it explains their origin.
I don't really care about that. My favourite MC right now is an ant. An ant that's female in body but male in mind, I still love the dumbass either way

If the story is good, it won't matter. There are plenty of stories where people imagine themselves as the character regardless of gender. A story shouldn't really be defined by what is in the character's pants.

That being said, I know I've said I prefer female protagonist stories but that's because I like romance and it doesn't tend to feature heavily in stories with a male lead.

It's battle shounen, so who cares. If they can ass-pull deus ex machina wins and use the power of friendship they qualify. Heck, even a stone could be a shounen MC if they're able to somehow get needlessly spontaneous power-ups or scream "FRIENDSHIP!!!!!!!!"...

it can be shounen while also dealing with identity! the problem comes in when it's mentioned and never brought up again. but if done right, and tastefully, it can be pretty dang good. but also agree: as described that would not be a non-binary gender identity. it would instead be either intersex or sexless. sex has to do with physiology, while gender, which can include sexual physiology, has to do with identity

Usually authors assign a gender to a genderless race. What protag goes by 'it'?

Like in mechanical crafter the main character is a golem called repair. However, the MC is also a reincarnator and was male in the previous life. So while a bot doesn't have any gonads that doesn't mean that they can't pick a pronoun.

So if the protag is a bio-computer of a hivemind-like species of alien, then does that make it a "she" since it could manipulate genetic material inside its body and create minions?

If it parasitises a male host to avoid detection and made intensive change to the flesh-suit to enhance combat-ability instead of reproduction and minion creating then that makes it a transmale?

1) It, it's a computer.

2) Depends. Parasites have gender (Flatworms), so it all depends which kind of parasite you're talking about. Or are we still talking about the same "bio-computer"?

Yup. Same one.

Hermaphroditic or asexual.

The host's gender/sex don't affect the parasite's gender. At most, you could say the parasite is masculine presenting, but it would be more accurate to call this a disguise instead.

Probably won't read it.
I hate how many times I agree with this man

technically he is a monster and can not reproduce without the right evolution. ALSO! He is He/Ant. Joke didn’t work out

If the story is good then sure, I'll go give it a gander. But if the whole being non binary thing is the only personality the MC has, or if anything relating to politics and gender identity become the whole plot, then I'm sorry. I would drop it without a single thought.

I wouldn't really care? The mc can be whatever and that is fine. As long as the story is fun, and also for a story that is hypothetically primarily about action, then hopefully good action as well.

Present me with a story, not with the gender of the MC.

If anything starts out with defining pronouns or gender or preferences, I'm out. Entice me with a story then the MC can be an androgyn space monkey for all I care.

It's stupid. Who gives a shit if they have one dick, three dicks, are female and have fourteen vaginas, it doesnt matter to the story. It's an unnecessary detail with no benefits to the plot. I'm not gonna get all excited because the MC has a dick and a vagina.
When Philip Jose Farmer have written "Open To Me, My Sister"? I guess, it was in early 1960-s. Around that time, descriptions of alien sexual anatomy and physiology was really new and revolutionary. But now it's really the old news and virtually no one will give a sh*t, as you've said.
