Out of all the antagonists in your novel(s), which is your favorite?

Mine is the one-sided rival of my Mc, who constantly overestimates and misinterprets her and the things she does. Like the Mc almost killed a guy in a match in such a casual way that the rival saw it as ruthless, calculating move to build up her reputation. In reality the Mc had no confidence in her ability to win, so she just used one of her strongest spells assuming he’d block or dodge it. With her relaxed demeanor and surprise afterwards it seemed like she no-diffed the guy to everyone.

Nerd time.

Argante from Jerusalem Delivered. He's cool and is meant to be a Homeric-esque warrior, obsessed with fame and glory, and meant to bounce off of Tancred, who possesses the same traits but baptized into Christianity.

Alternatively, I also really like Smaug from The Hobbit. He's just cool, and has an epic speech to Bilbo.

Or, nostalgia bait, Darth Vader. I lived and breathed the original trilogy when I was a kid. Vader is ever awesome.

I don't have any novel written, but heck if I'll let that stop me.

I don't have a definite the most favourite, the top 1 antagonist. But one that is something recent and I still remember is killmonger from Black Panther (MCU) i haven't read comics so don't bash me on its canon authenticity.

I just loved his backstory, and the amount of weight they let that character hold throughout the film. For well over half the film you actually feel like rooting for Killmonger (XD) it is only when he's self-destructive and harms even his own wakanda (RIP herb garden) that you start thinking (wake up T'challa! He ending the franchise here!)

Ofcourse the movie apart from him was spectacular and probably added to why i liked him so much. Still my no 1 MCU movie, craps like iron man, captain America, thor, star lord don't even come close XD. RIP Chadwick Boseman, we all miss him :(

I have only written one novel to completion but none of them would have any antagonists except the environment. But in fiction I really like Riddler from Batman

Romulus the first king of Rome, the Progenitor of Modern Civilization!
He opposes my MC because he doesn't agree with her way of saving humanity. While my MC is willing to sacrifice anyone for her cause, The purest of saint or the worst sinner, Romulus will save them all.
It is poetic in a sense, both of them wanted to save humanity, either are hero, both are royalty in a sense. They acknowledged each other, that is why they can't let the other live.

My favourite antagonist is still Zero Two.
It wants to reduce everything to zero so that nothing must be in pain anymore.
It's simple but beautiful.

Petelgeuse Romanee-Conti and likewise Regulus Corneas.

The first one has what many of my favorite villains have. He is delightfully insane like the joker, but his first introduction is quite horrifying for the unprepared.

Regulus is like my second favorite villain type. He is unbelievably smug. He hates when anyone tries to command him, and he is the type that is a real piece of shit. But you love to hate him.

Xanathos from Gargoyles. Hands down a fucking genius.

The guy has a whole trope named after him.

Also, he is a very good and easy case study (due to being a villain in an animated series) for how to write intelligent/scheming antagonists.

PS. Ooops, didn't read the thread title OP carefully. No matter. Have a free pop-cultural reference instead. (I haven't written many books.)

Omnilord.
When an Otaku nerd winds up Isekai'd into the body of a demon, he claws his way to the top of thedemon army with his Encyclopedia like knowledge of the Wikipedia entry for the game he wound up in.

So he's not gonna be some loser demon lord.no no no. Demon lords Lose. He's no demon lord.

He's The OMNILORD.

And what's great about him, is how much the MC finds himself agreeing with the antagonist.

He's the worst of Andrew tate combined with Hitler and all the game savvy of an OCD autist who wrote the Wikipedia about the game the MC is trapped in. He's calm, logical, plans ahead, and has excellent arguments for why women are evil and you can't trust those gold digging harpies because they aren't capable of love.

Only men are capable of love and compassion.

Which is a wonderful counterpart to the MC who is a total simp to the point he can't bring himself to kill a woman, even if she's a mass murderer and it's to save hundreds of innocent lives!

Both have totally unhealthy views of women in wonderful ways!

Mine's Gaius Julius Caesar, since I 'explored' his character beyond the well-known dictator and his infamous assassination. And most of his beliefs clashed with the MC, complicating his character more.
