I don't think you should try to crush people's dreams. In so doing, they will perceive you crushing them not their dreams. And they won't trust you as much for it. Instead build them up. Help them create and open themselves up to new abilities. Be their hero. Not their villain.

I help those who ask for help, and I did my fair share of helping out. Here and elsewhere, too.

But I also saw a fair share of buffoons who ask for help and then scoff at it. So, no, some people need a mirror.

Back in the "old days", when I have been still active and allowed on the Royal Road, there have been a lot of discussions about their rating system....

Despite the popular belief, I didn't start most of them.

I remember there has been the popular belief that the established writers did everything in their power to crush their competition in order for them to maintain their rating. Complainers were laughed at, of course.

"Walrus King", one of the highest ranked writers on the Royal Road and frequent participants in those discussions, frequently mocked us that they (the top ranked) didn't need to sabotage us, they just need to put their effort in writing one more chapter.

Now, year (or more?) later, one of the most successful writers on the Scribble Hub seems to put a lot of effort into discouraging writers from writing too, rather than writing one more chapter.

Why is that?

Because there are two types of people:

Those who take it as an insult and those who can recognize the warning within.

It is everything of what to expect and what they will need to overcome if they are serious about it. All of those points is something I have experienced one way or another.

They are pitfalls and my warning to newcomers.

And also an insult to those who do each and every of the points I mentioned and never learn from it, posting another abandoned, low-effort garbage that takes away time and eyeballs from those who take it seriously.

Sigh.....

(I know it is a bad idea to take a bait, but I'll bite)

I left the Royal Road to escape the behaviour like this.

The Scribble Hub is the small site.

Vast majority of the writers here are the hobbyist, writing their stories in the spare time without prospect of any payment or a compensation, while they could do literally anything else.

Yes, those hobbyists are amateurs. They don't have any formal education or a training. They don't have any skill, perhaps any talent, many of them don't even have English as the first language, yet they try posting, while they could literally play a game or do something that doesn't involve people hurling insults at them and their skills.

They might not be entitled to the commercial success, but on the tiny site like this, I doubt they expect any. This is too tiny, minor site for this. Perhaps those approaching larger sites, or even actual publishers, may expect to be the next hit and then be angry to be screwed over the editors, but on the small site like this one, it isn't feasible. Or possible, for what matters.

Yet, I think they should be spared of insults or condescending comments from the major writers like you.

It's a hobby.

A business competition is for the people who make living out of it.

You don't scream at the children playing football (soccer for Americans) in the park that they are ****** because they will never make it to Premier League...

What, you think I did or do? Please. I am not even native English speaker and work 60 hour weeks. So what?

Keep telling yourself that.

You don't scream at the children playing football (soccer for Americans) in the park that they are ****** because they will never make it to Premier League...
99% of those people aren’t even aware the forum exists. So no, I’m not shouting at them.

And I can’t help those like you who take everything as a personal attack.

If you take offense to the list, it's on you. The truth is still valid in what I wrote. It's your problem if you see yourself in those points and instead of realization to what to change you get defensive.

Tl;Dr

What I wrote is true. It is written for those who want to be successful. If you don't want to be, then who cares? Move on with your life. And if you can’t, that is on you. Again.

American here ... :blob_hide:

They do when it's Little League baseball (They shouldn't, but they do. The kid is ten years old. He's not earning $40 million a year! ? )

My experience with the Royal Road is a long story...

I even agreed to shut up about it, but once again, got provoked.

Hm, perhaps it is a cultural thing.
