You open up a Cultivation story, what do you expect?

Some other things.

MC who is on top possibly even the god emperor of the universe, but is betrayed by those closest to him and then reincarnates into some nobody in the middle of nowhere that had clogged chakras or something like that that prevented him from cultivating so his fiance shamed him by publicly breaking off the engagement.

Oh I also forgot nepotism. Lots and lots of nepotism.

I expect that Wuxia, Xianxia, and Xuanhuan are three different genres.

It is funny that people get those shuffled so much. I guess its just that naming conventions are different.

I've said before that it isn't that hard to mix them all together, and I kinda of mean it. The hardest would be putting more of the historical aspect of Wuxia. You may just tell a story with several cultural settlements and all have some sort of cultivation or not. This way you dab into Xianxia and Xuanhuan. One of the main topics about Xianxia is the immortal shenanigans (which kinda of puts people into those infinite storylines), but nothing actually impedes that this follows a lower form of fantasy, and even a more slice of life/contained form to it.

What kinda of itches me about Cultivation and Xianxia in a whole is that people mostly follow tropes mindlessly and repeat the same formula endlessly. There's a lot of potential into the ideas that surround the setting and genre but most of them are neutered to enter specific boxes. People seem to get a hold around nomenclature and tropes, but instead of working with them and twisting them for something new, they just slap it on top of their story and call it a day.

Those are things I can take from many of the comments out here. It leaves me guessing: is it something inherent to the genre and its structure, or is it that this new model of publication (online, independent and most of it in amateur style) amplifies these effects?

(and just to contextualize...here in Brazil we have nothing similar to SH, RR, Narou, or whatever. The closer we have is a version of Fanfiction.net and a shittier Wattpad. I say this for a reason: because of the lack in this online market we kinda of...simply never had to deal with these things I speaking about ! We have zero exposure to cultivation, xianxia, litrpg, and I think the only popular trending genre we get is Isekai, but only 1 novel in the market deals with it)

Most of the Xianxia/Wuxia/XuanHuan MCs are no better than the young masters they fight again the only difference being that they are the MC so we are supposed to be on their side and they have plot armour.

Like usually they are just as arrogant, prideful, vindictive, lecherous etc.

I currently got into playing Wuxia RPGs courtesy of a bad friend of mine, and there are universes of difference to whatever is tagged "Wuxia" around here... In those games, you play the typical righteous bunch of Chinese robin hoods or some martial arists that need to Suikoden something instead of the nymphomaniac murder hobos you see in the stories here.

But what I expect when I hear "cultivation" are all the bad tropes. Weak-ass or crippled MC that is getting shit on by some cannon fodder in the first few chapters only to get some legendary artifact or bump into some ancient universe-level grandgrandgrandgrandgrandgrandgrandgrandmaster that teaches MC the unparalleled art of OP because of the Old Mentor trope. MC then gets to slap ass and bitches and win tournaments way over his weight class and gets to blow more money than a reality star and Trump combined, and after the first arc is over the only thing that changes are names and power levels.

It's why there's a difference between Wuxia and Xianxia or Xuanhuan

If it's a manwha, I expect well drawn female characters with expertly shaped assets that are entirely unrealistic, but very nice to look at.

I also expect the dudes to be muscular even though they clearly don't lift as much as I do. Buncha weanies, the lot of them.

If I see something with the cultivation tag then I fully expect to see crop and/or animal farming and the cultivation of land.

I just want to read a book about a dude farming his or her land. There is no real genre for this. Cultivation fits perfectly and yet, it was stolen... Just like the farmlands Qi Wu shong had cultivated with centuries of his ancestors labor and trial.

Perhaps, I shall write this story. It'll be about a dude growing crops during the Canaanite period and all the struggles that come with it. Storms, drought, pests, disease, plundering armies, etc.

When I first touched Cultivation this was my literal thought. I just got to my roommate with a lot of enthusiasm:
"AYO DUDE! See! There's like 1000 stories about farming, man! I'm so hype for this!"
"Oh...huhm...no they're about asian nuke-people and magical smut."
"Wait...wha...?"

Perhaps I also one day indulge on writing the life of a farmer in some shit fantasy world where he keeps getting dirty by gods, and unrealistic heroes coming by.
