The beginning after the end, Chaos:heir and Suprem Magus are novel that fusion both system and (in my opinion) are well made. Also I don't remember the name but there was one novel with different planet and on each, civilization come with different power system, some goes with the cultivation one, another with the magic system, and there was one with rune system.

I think these two system don't appear in most novel clashing against each other is because they are the same at their origin. Mage use the energy of the universe/world to use magic spell (while creating a mana core in their body for a few story), while cultivator do the same with the energy to strengthen their body.
The only difference is that cultivator want to and can reach godhood.
Well, you can have that difference and throw it out the window. Apparently mages also seek godhood, longevity and all the desires a grubby human wants.

So for my method of differentiating them, I will try to link cultivators more on training their bodies and mutating it while mages "study" the laws of reality and find methods to manipulate them.

To put it simple, I have the cultivators acting as Players in a game where they grind and grind until their supposed reward of a high level character that may or may not have admin rights eventually while mages are Hackers who try to look behind the curtain and hack the game instead.

Also, I often see Supreme Magus and The Beginning After the End as iffy. Because they somehow bastardized quantified magic wielding. For the record, it is inevitable due to the need to have quantifiable levels just like how Chinese Cultivation started as mumbo BS and someone made levels with Qi Condensation and onwards.

I try not to do that and use D&D 3.5e's wizards for mages, because technically for a person to be a wizard, all they need is the ability to study the mystic. Whether or not they can achieve anything is solely dependent on their understanding.

This is similar to how initially cultivation started as, all you need to do is to know how and what to eat, exercise and breathe. But then in order to have the "chosen one" moment, writers put in spiritual root or the innate ability to cultivate. So yeah... putting something like a barrier of entry makes it more like sorcerer because sorcerer inherits their parents' gifts.

ps. This makes Harry Potter a Sorcerer, not a Wizard.

For the cultivator it depend the novel too. Some just focus on the body while there novel who focus on the law of the universe to understand elements and manipulate them.

And the level for the cultivation was made long time ago in the taoism, that not new and that why most use it with the qi condensation, golden core, nascent soul, etc
