Does anyone here every write trash for fun?

Like you post your dedicated novel while on the side, you write one you really are just there to enjoy and you, maybe, will post it.

That's what I like to do.

I can dump the trash over there, so I can put the groceries over here.

Kind of. I guess. Well... No. Not really.
For me, I guess it would be 'trash', but when I really sit and think about it, it isn't.
(Aestelle Nocte was quite literally just a fun little side-project to let me clear my head between chapters of Aethara and The Elarian Chronicles).
I even picked an otherwise trashy genre (harem rom-com) to write in for it...
And end up with... well... a series that is likely to have four conlangs (Constructed Languages), my typical world-building depth and scope, and layered characters with actual depth to them.
So... basically the opposite of most harem trash out there.

So... I tried... but I guess it didn't quite turn out that way.

I write too slowly to do that kinda stuff. I did try it last year (or maybe two years ago?), thinking of releasing a chapter every April fools day, but I was still too slow to finish the chapter before April came around.

The novel I worked so hard for and dedicated three years of my life is trash, so it shoots two birds in one stone.

My writing speed is already so slow for what I actually want to write that devoting any time at all to a side project would drop me down to a smooth 1 chapter a month

What you consider trash others might view as a treasure.

For example, I consider AI translations of Chinese stories pretty trashy, but I guess it's valuable enough to earn 20k a month.

Personally, I think what you consider trashy are just impulsive stories without too much thought put into them. Sometimes you'll create a fantastic story by accident, so just go with it. It also helps prevent writing block to sometimes just put the first stupid idea from your mind into words.

I agree with this sentiment. Technically the closest thing I get to trashy is when I really want erotica between my characters... so I knockout like 2 or 3 chapters of it then... yea. afterwards I usually delete it. I think delusional is the best work.

All the time. I usually focus my best efforts on the story I want to tell and then write a junk story whenever I get writer's block. That said, everything I post online is 'junky,' including the ones I put effort into. The stuff I actually try to write for anything other than practice gets kept in a folder to make the lit mag circuit (they typically dislike anything that's been 'published' anywhere).

Kind of, but not exactly trash. I'm writing another story, it's just very slow going, and I'll probably edit the hell out of it before it ever sees the light of day, for now it is more just for fun. But I saw some other dude originally doing a joke post of a Godzilla × Highschool DXD fanfic that got so popular, he had to sideline his other stories for a few months to focus on that one.

I can write some insanely wild trash. sure.
Would it be good? that questionable. But would anyone read it? Probably. Would it go viral? also, probably.
-But not because it's good. but because it would have FBI knocking on my door faster than a pizza delivery could.

Yeah, I wrote a two-shot shitpost novel years ago. It was pretty dumb.

There's an interesting phenomena that can occur when writing "trash". Because you're not putting restrictions or expectations on yourself, and you're not worrying about what readers will/won't like, your work actually turns out better as a result. The stress or enthusiasm of the author will show through their work.

I thought writing "trashy smut" would be a w-h-o-l-e lot easier than it turned out to be. It took a whole lot of starts and "scrap it, start over" before it started to "catch". Three diff POV trials. about 16 different... okay, lost it there. Back up and keep going from point x... until I could get past "cringe" and get in the groove and just go from there. Honestly didn't think it would be as difficult as it turned out to be.
