How much do you write ahead before posting, if at all? I'm curious to see what other folks do.

It's difficult to say since I write in pretty paper notebooks that vary in size, but I'm in the process of typing up my third, I have two full ones, and I'm writing in my sixth now, so expect the current length of my story to double at the minimum.

For my current original, it's 5-7 chapters ahead depending on my mood and usually it's 5 chapters since it's for my patreon.

As for my first fanfiction, it's my first time writing one and I thought of keeping a lot of stock but I ended up publishing it after I wrote the third chapters. I can't resist.

I write full volumes before starting the upload cycle. Gives me a bit of leeway and makes sure that the story does not get left hanging once I get the ball rolling. However, that creates around 4-6 month gaps between volumes.

It's fine for me. Actual LNs publish in that schedule anyway lol.

I plan ahead (and write short drafts/reminders) for multiple volumes in advance. I plan in detail (chapter level) for the current volume so that I have a clear writing prompt for each chapter.

But actual writing is only 1,2 chapters if any.
I don't have a patreon, so I mostly just throw them out when they are ready...

Aiming for at least 10. It's a good number. And works nicely with Patreon too. But trying to have more whenever possible.

I plan ahead with my stories, starting from the general idea (Arc) > mid-level ideas (Volumes) > details (Chapter). Once I'm satisfied with my plans, I write an entire volume before releasing it to the wild.

I'll start writing ahead if I want to get a Patreon.

But honestly, I just want money for artwork commissions. One time donations should be more suited for that. Dunno what to use for that though.

I'm currently 102 chapters (320,000 words) ahead of my release. And I intend for things to stay that way.

My backlog has 500 chapters that just need to be edited and arranged for publication. I need to set some aside for a Patreon or something. New stuff I come up with either gets one a week made ahead or five for the week. Depending on my ability to get them out.

I'm six chapters ahead, which doesn't sound like much, but my chapters are anywhere from 10k to 40k words. With a 3k to 4k part every Friday, I have quite a backlog. Keep in mind that they aren't edited, which is something I desperately need to get around to doing.

I've started both my stories with 0 chapters ahead. Now I have about a week ahead. Do what fits your writing style but I think rewriting months ahead just causes people to not release anything in the end.

Sometimes I'll write ahead a few chapters before posting. Other times I'll post as I go and have no chapters ahead. Depends on what I feel like doing with the book at the time

Backlogs never work for me because I’m both a perfectionist (I edit as I write) and a procrastinator, so they just vanish without me writing enough to maintain them :blob_melt:

One time donations should be more suited for that. Dunno what to use for that though.

Try ko-fi perhaps.
