One of the worst tropes in existence.
It can be done well. I mean, not if it is delivered like that, but if the reader is unsure of what was a dream/Illusion and what was reality. American Psycho, for example, did it rather well. But generally, I agree with you.

It can work when it's a character exploration. However if the people like the story for the actual plot more so than the main character then suddenly going "it was all fake" is a good way to piss off the readers since the thing they actually liked about the story has effectively been dismissed.

  • Have my MC give up and return back to his time period.
  • Take back my thigh
  • Have the demon lord turn evil(maybe)
  • Finish the story with the Russian hero and mage but not have them fuck
  • Continue writing the island
