Just my opinion, but I think they do anal to keep the person "technically" a virgin since there is no tearing of the hymen.

Some people also see it as a higher sacrifice for love since only the penetrator is the one feeling the pleasure, while the one getting penetrated is only experiencing pain. And it is also considered taboo, making it more thrilling. (This is what my gay friend told me. I swear I haven't tried it because I'm straight as a yard stick).

Not going to touch the LGBT angles.

IRL, some women are into it, so of course it bleeds over to smut works. It isn't all pain for many of them.

In writing, is can be used for many things. Sex without pregnancy, showing a wild side to the woman. It is also used as a sign of submission, that everything of hers belongs to the MC, or the flip side, proves the dominance of the male in the scene taking whatever he wants so to speak. It has other uses as well, with toys etc.

Why you see it so much? Many readers obviously enjoy it enough that is fairly common in a lot of smut. Sex sell, and for some the more 'depraved' the better. (There is a point IMO where it is too much but that isnt anal.)

Personally, it is my 2nd least favorite form of 'vanilla' smut to write, feet being number one (*Barf*) and it stays out of my works for the most part.
