What do you mean by what happened?
I don't recall things being any different in the past. Granted I am in my thirties and maybe you are talking about a time before I was born.
I guess I'm tired of shipping characters for dumb reasons.

Cause adding romance open a lot of plot, be it romantic scene, drama, or depending of the type of story, the damsel in distress plot. And overall, in all your readers, you can be sure that 1/4 of it imagine romance between your characters, writing some hint can feed them for a long time and when their ship succeed or fail, you heard them too.

Well, at least it's what I think about why author use it most of the time.

Yet somehow, sex is often more taboo a subject to talk about than murder.

The moment two characters interact people think that means they want to jump in bed and stay for hours.

What happened to the Bond of Friendship?
For some people it is easier to imagine a casual sex relationship rather than a unbreaking non-erotic.
