If I remember my folklore class, vampirism was originally a curse because people killed too much during their life, or ate other people's flesh (much like wendigos). They were removed from God's love, unable to see the light of day again, or die trying.

A vampire is the ultimate representation of a r*pist, a serial killer, someone who hunts you down in the dark. It's very scary at night, but wouldn't make much sense during the day when life is bustling, so I think it comes from that

I'll have you know that some of my best friends are vampires. And they are good honest people.

According to one of the theories, mythology directly originates from the animal instincts of a time when we were not yet rational. The fear of dead bodies of kin, the fear of night for daytime creatures, and the fear of sick relatives—all of this transformed into the undead, rising under the cover of night to harm the living. During the day, they are invisible or lie motionless—probably because it is light.

light = good , dark = evil,
bats
drama, to balance things out, to give them a certain weakness
.... and there is more, in folklore vampires weren't harmed by the sun, I think that first changed when dracula came out , someone copied it and went extreme instead of weakening a vampire; turning him into ash , and that leads to .....
well modern vampires lack logic so I won't bother

Bram Stokers Dracula was never affected poorly by the sun. It was added into the silent Nosforatu film where he was defeated by the sunlight. Most pre-Stoker vampires were not affected by the sun at all or were somewhat bothered by it at most. Stokers wife actually sued the filmmakers for not only being a poor adaption of the book but also for copyright infringement since they didn't get permission first. In other words, sunlight was a bad deus ex machina used to defeat the villian of a poor adaption.

I am quite sure the "to leave one's work free of vandalism or alterations without the author's permission" is a part of the authorship rights and not copyrights but I can be wrong.

You are correct. She sued over copyright issues that were related to them never getting the licensing to use her husband's work in any manner rather than over alterations. Here's a few links to info about it:
