In most fantasy stories, dragons are or will be on top echelon, even main stream channels too. I mean not just on a top dog level like vampires for example, in most stories they are on God's level or their rivals.

In games too Anything related with dragon are Powerful or prestigious, why does those flying lizards receive such preferential treatment compared to other magical beasts,

Some variant of dragon or close-enough-to-dragon-that-we-decided-to-call-it-a-dragon exists in countless culture's mythologies all across the world. And in a lot of them, they are related to the gods. It's not necessarily that dragons are inherently special among mythological creatures, it's that there's a lot of variety between mythological creatures, and dragons are just an arbitrary category made by happenstance that a whole bunch of mythological creatures fit into, making the idea of a dragon universal, even if what a dragon actually is varies heavily by culture. (And the main vision people have of what a dragon is tends to be the European one, probably 'cause colonialism). The label 'dragon' gets stuck to anything that vaguely fits the bill. Big lizard? Dragon! Big snake? Dragon! Scales? Dragon!

It also might be related to some of the gods worshipped in Ancient Mesopotamia (Tiamat?), cause that's where a lot of the foundations of culture started, and the roots there influenced basically every religion and mythology in the region as far as I know.

Basically they stumbled their way into being a universal symbol, and then that snowballed, as they were well known and respected, which caused more people to adopt them symbolically and in stories, which caused them to become more well known and respected, which- you get the idea.

What you say isn't really true, not universally. There are lots and lots of stories where dragons are just animals at best, or evil monsters.

But we get what you mean.

Largely, it's because dragons have been part of human mythology since before civilization. There are pre-civilization artifacts that are carved into the shapes of dragons. Dragons are the prototypical/primordial deities. They're the predator as force of nature, and always have been. And if you want to learn the secrets of nature, you either go talk to a dragon, or you kill one and drink its blood or eat its heart. We're all steeped in those stories, and so we learn to treat them that way and write more stories like them.

On top of that, dragons were the enemy of the Christian god for a long, long time. There are lots of stories about knights and saints riding out and defeating dragons as part of the church's efforts to colonize Europe and the rest of the world. That catches the modern imagination by casting dragons in the light of being victims of and the resistance to the church's oppression. And so a lot of authors who've experienced harm at the hand of some form of Christianity or another will lift dragons up as something more pure and almost heroic, but in a chaotic and natural kind of way. As representatives of the Earth itself.

Hi!

Read girldragongizzard for more! :D

(There's also a bit of orientalism going on, because Chinese Lung, which everyone generally calls dragons, have been the celestial rulers for thousands of years, and those of us who like dragons in general to be powerful tend to fall in love with the idea of the Lung and adopt many of their traits for our own dragons.)

Probably because Dragons have been part of mythologies since ancient times, and they are known to be strong. In Asia, particularly China, Eastern Dragons represent fortune and prosperity. While in Western and Europe, Dragons are considered powerful creatures that wreak havoc. That's why there are many epic about Dragon slaying such as Sigurd and Beowulf.

But my most favorite Dragon is Imagine Dragon. Imagine Dragon my balls all over your face. Hahahaha!

Its mostly because of the influence of many folklores and mythologies all around the world.
I don't know is this is true or not But in my opinion ancient humans mostly began to worship what they fear. so imagine a 100 years alligator which is more than 6 meter long and weigh more than 1 ton living in wild with humans having only hand weapons and no guns or modern weaponry or some big lizards like Komodo dragons and snakes or anything so they began to worship them and offering them with food like sacrificing someone or something. And like we also idealize our deities in modern time with the aesthetics and fashion sense we have now, so they also made their deities like a flying lizard or something for giving them more grand appearance and leaving a lesson to the future generations to be more worshipping to them in fear. SO they were comparable to gods in ancient times. I don't about your countries but in mine people freak out when they see any type of a reptile (eg small harmless home lizards) as if it was in their blood(I know it doesn't) so their first reaction to be frightened. the ancients are teaching us to be frightened of them till now. So we also worship what we fear and make dragons some deities or something evil.

Also, gotta ask:

If it happens that you don't just constantly want to be a dragon, why not?

The idea of a giant scaly fire-breathing thingy that could also fly is horrifying and amazing at the same time.
People genuinely get interested in cool rocks, what more for flying dinosaurs?

Western dragons: Flying, fire-breathing lizards of immense power. Eaters of livestock, destroyers of villages and kingdoms alike. Basically the closest thing you can get to demons and the Devil without actually naming demons and the Devil.

Eastern Dragons: Flying lizards of with varying powers (mostly water-based). Not eaters of livestock! Viewed as being both powerful and wise, often serving as assistants to various deities, if not a god themselves. Symbols of good fortunes and positive omens of things to come in the near future.

Basically, dragons are looked at as godly beings because they are, by every measure of the word, "godly". It doesn't matter what mythology you pull from, they are just that smart and powerful, and that's in every culture you can think of.

For most people even normal lizards/eels seem to be in uncanny valley territory, now imagine them big as f*ck, flying, and controlling fire and/or water, the two most overrated elements of nature....

I blame drunk people on the good PR of Chuuni lizards.

They are wealthy. Have you ever seen a dragon's hoard? It takes a fraction of that to hire a decent PR agency. And once your reputation is built, maintaining it is less expensive.

These days it only takes a few good movie placements every year to ensure the pop cultural status of dragonkind.

Scalies have entered the chat.

On a slightly more serious note, Dragons were always a sign of power even before the rpg and fantasy story stuff. Western mythology has them as evil monstrous foes to be defeated while Eastern mythology has them as sources of wisdom and knowledge. They're considered the embodiment of nature and chaotic strength. In other words. Big lizard is big power.
