I hate this answer when I get it but in this situation it really does depend; both styles get readers, fans and those who hate the pacing. Just make it feel right for your type of story and writing style and readers will come

just happened to me
write what you want lol
you can change somethings if you want it to be more popular, but if you want to write YA Isekai LitRPG number 153, you will be miserable while writing it.
I think it's happened to all of us, I tried a LitRPG myself and I couldn't get past the first chapter.

Neither. Readers want proper pacing for each scene and the story as a whole. If the story warrants a slow or fast pace then it should be paced in such a manner, slowing down or speeding up depending on how the scene is supposed to play out. some people like fast-paced stories and others like slow-paced stories but everyone can enjoy a well-paced story. For example, an action scene needs to be fast-paced because, well, it's an action story. If it's something like a slice of life then it will probably be slow-paced. However, a political scene can be either fast-paced or slow-paced depending on how heated the scene is. If your pace is too fast then you get a list of actions and dialogue and you won't get any readers. If the story is too slow-paced then it takes forever for things to happen and you'll lose even the most patient of readers.

Something where you can tell which character is who. You know, just by the way, they talk. I learned that the hard way.

As an eternal 18years old teen (coughcoughYUKARIcoughcoughHOUSHOUMARINEcoughcough)
that saw with my own eyes the evolution of internet

If 2010, slow
if 2023, fast recommended

Of course not 100% fit the mold

But let's say that with 2023, where you can do a giga fun game with 30min of time, or you have 50 mangas in stock to read, HUNDREDS of novels to finish, dozens of animes, and maybe 5-6 games unfinished, welp i guess you understood what i meant

Though, even if its called "fast paced", in fact there is the REALLY fast paced and the SLOW fast paced

If in 2010, there is like a "Fortune teller" plot novel (comrademao website) where MC grow his powers slowly, get a villa, and there is like ONE arc for 1 client about repercussion
then now in 2023, you see ton of (chinese) novels, where the MC livestream fortune teller and solve 5 clients with just 13chaps
which is the "very fast paced", and give "industrial chain" vibe

Or you get the slow faced livestream lawyer series, where the "client" explain the problem, MC tell the laws, where its wrong, what to do the client, then reactions, etc

In fact, most novels now are fast pace. Example without thinking "True endgame" (favorite on Scribb). Bam, 1 waifu near the beginning, strength is slowly but surely fast won. Situations are solved in like a few chapters or 1 arc.

The true slow paced, would like, no system, no cheat. Hmmm, an example would be like : Savage divinity (a series i both dislike and liked on RoyalR)
MC mine slave, saved by a group of people from a op village of martial arts (and is heaven compared to outside), even after bunch of chaps grown-up MC strength is kinda stuck, both strong-weak, bc he got lot of "energy" but his strenght is subpar but bonus of strong regen.
Bunch of situation where MC keep dodging death.
Heck, author himself make a joke about it. With MC : swearing he will try to not brush death FOR AT LEAST 1 month this time.
With his biggest record being like 5months.
Then the heroine is possibly the early "bunny loli -> teen", but of course you get the bullshit "I ONLY SEE HER AS A SISTER" cliche, meanwhile MC visit brothels often. Someone spoiling she get together with her but far far later.

Or another slow pace genre, would like MOVIE MAKER chinese novels.
If in 2010+, it was easy to find this kind of webnovels. And it was SO ENJOYABLE seeing the chapters that show the reaction POV of spectator for the movies. With longest reaction arc being like 8 BIG CHAPTERS for the movie "I am not the medicine king = Dying to survive (english)"
But in 2023, now they just write reactions in like 5 chaps max (BUT SHORT CHAPS), which is disgustingly boring.
---------------
Also beside the slow pace and the fast pace.
There is the giga mega fast pace. And seriously its facepalming cringe.
"Do x, you are rewarded 80shares of TENCENT" ---- "Do y, you get 50 billions" ------- "Do z, you are rewarded with top notch skills"
Especially rampant with my favorite genre, "dad novels" hence destroying it.
Everytime the wife is a super star that gave birth to the child(ren), then Mc awaken system :
"Starting noobie package, divine chef skills rewarded"
"Get a kiss from daughter, you get sports car"
etc etc
--------------------------
Of course not saying its a bad choice to write slow pace series nowadays, but just that the audience isnt the same.
And you will have a hard time be popular if the MC need 50chap, just to finally be able to use fireball in a realistic isekai.

though if the quality is extraordinary, even people that dislike a genre could try because of its popularity.

I will conclude my previous post, by adding a new info

The problem isn't "what readers like"
The problem is "Are you, as the author, good at writing ?"

4 examples
Slow pace :

1) There was a restaurant WN, the author describe all the process while MC cook like adding salt, fry this or that, add oil, XXg added etc
Sorry but for me its boring, even though i like slow pace
2) There is a cook MC that have system that reward slow, or in fact, simply numerize his "skills of cooking". With at beginning the only thing the cheat could help, is simply telling is the quality of the ingredients and the finished product. Mc kept trying over over again to do a good dish. MC sell on a stall, and soon won a old man master (famous chef incognito). THIS, was fun unlike (1)

Fast pace
3) Cliche series where MC got a restaurant and god of cooking skills and everyone is baffled. The reactions of people eating his dishes are just crappy "wow its good". Sorry but i dropped it with astonishing boring it feels. Its anticlimatic to be honest.
4) Another cliche restaurant series. But guess what. Despite both series having named characters as clients/eaters, author portray them well, and feel alive. With own characteristics. In fact, later on, there is the genius idea that the "customers" because of how good the restaurant is, their lives get better = some directly quit their jobs with shitty bosses and do better by themselves self employed, everyone as they can't pre-order run to the restaurant so they now very healthy (even some that were tired after 4stairs, now run them easy in company), some people collaborate with other clients as friends, some people with unheathy habits begin to live healthy just to eat more food of MC, etc etc

Anyway, if before the proverb was before "good wine isnt afraid of deep alleys"
now it is "even good wine is afraid of deep alleys"

But if you look carefully, its "good wine".
So even if you do wine (write novel), if its "bad wine", sorry but it wont sell at all.

@SailusGebel @HelloHound @RepresentingEnvy @Paul_Tromba @Corty (pinging as maybe it would interest you guys ^^b)

In fact, the ultimate answer is easy by returning this question
"What is popular : short videos (face pace) or long video (slow pace) ?"

and sending the person to youtube / youtube shorts to check the number of views / likes of 2023 videos
ps : and also proving Sailus' point too about "depend website", if comparing youtube to dailymotion or other video websites kekwXD
ps ps : if you see any thread that ask again the question, you can re-use this question as an answer to them XD
ps ps ps : bonus gift to anyone reading all
