I know we’re writers and not game developers, but I think many of us here have played a game or two and think about our stories could be told in other medium outside of walls of text. This is just a thought experiment and place to yap.

My current story I keep updating bi-daily is probably the most eligible because it’s set somewhere close to the real world outside of magic and such so making it a hybrid of life-sim and rpg/action elements is probably what I would hypothetically go for. It’s also a story with many points of view so I could go for some sort of character creation game with some sandbox element and having altercations with characters from the original story now and then. Hunt monsters for money, maybe mercenary work to rank up, those sort of things with limited action point (instead of real-time clock those always stress me out)
Technically I could also do that with other slowburn stories but it’s set way in the past where standards are different the MCs are more likely to shank you and give you a premature game over.
Using the actual MCs of most of these stories aren’t gonna be fun since they’re supposed to be stronger than 90% of the cast so either absurd suspension of disbelief or very few fights that are actually challenging and not a one-tap.

Anyway it’s just a thought experiment go one paragraph or massive wall of text idc.

Mhh I think it might be one of my originals Jing, which is irregularily updated and that could be used as a mystery game.
Making deals pursuring leads, similar to how Stray works.
Like heading towards a goal trough one area to another that are all connected to each other.

I think every single writer here has dreamed about their stories being either an anime/movie/series, a video game, or both.

Work as RPG game for sure, prologue - opening cutscene, my chapter 1-1.5 definitely intro tutorial of the game, chapter 2: new allies, chapter 3-3.5 go to city, chapter 4 unlock alchemy/synthesis mechanic and free roam, chapter 5-8 main quest, chapter 7-17 work as side quests increase character affinity of other characters, chapter 18 can work as main story until newest chapter.

Depends on the type of video game, I guess.
Strange Awakening would probably be best as an actioner with some RPG elements between fights.
Between Worlds would be a mixed game with strategy and RPG elements, and shifting between characters for challenges.
Digital Cowboy IS a video game (at least in his universe) - a massive MMORPG with multiple settings.

Games are my biggest inspiration, the magic system, especially the type of skills that the main duo uses is kind of a mix of Xenoblade and WoW. If I ever could somehow turn it into a game I think I'd love a xenoblade-esque combat system, with a more linear progression and tighter set pieces since I don't really like open world all that much anymore. My main character would be a sort of buffer/debuffer character, while his brother is the more active tank that you'd play as most of the time, but you could swap between them both as well as their little fairy companion. I don't know if she'd be a full party member though, or more like an ultimate you'd build up to since she is a fair bit more magically inclined than the other characters in the story.

I actually have tried to mess around with some game engines before, but I really have no idea where to even get started. I usually just mess around with the terrain building for a bit till I get confused and bored and then do something else.

I was planning to make a game, and when I realized it would never happen, I wrote a book since it was easier.

Only with the book, I was able to cast off a bunch of game mechanics and limitations that weren't necessary anymore. So the result was actually a little better, imo.

The one at my sig.

What genre is it?

Yes.

Idea is that you cycle through each character as the story progresses. Your actions/performance will affect who you will play next, which leads to replayability. Fighters will be like a 3rd-person action game, gunners will be FPS, the non-combat characters will be like those Telltale games where you need to say the right thing in order to get stuff done...

After completing some conditions, you will be able to unlock SCM (Single Character Mode) where you play through the entire plot as only that character. You can then factor in those characters' actions into your next playthrough. For example... you play as the spy and assassinate an annoying NPC that would have summoned a dragon to wreak havoc in the city. You can factor in that spy's actions so the next time you play as the gunner, something else will happen instead of shooting down a dragon. Later you can then have the gunner snipe someone the fighter was dealing with, that way when you SCM as the fighter, that strong enemy's absence will make the "reach point B before time runs out" much easier.
