So I had an idea for a rom-com, where a het-couple breaks up only for both of them to immediately confess to a mutual friend. The mutual friend misunderstands and agrees to go out with both of them. My only issue is what gender should the mutual friend be? I don’t want the story to be a harem, so I am iffy on having them be female but that was also my original plan.

So which would you prefer reading, and why?

You should do it based off whether you are better at creating male, female, or non-binary characters. That way you are more likely to create a very attractive and personable character that is more reasonable for them being the shared love interest of the ex-couple.
Whichever one you are better at writing is the one I'll vote for.

It’s just female and male they are easy to make attractive. What’s hard is giving them a character that feels real. And I find most media fake af but then again no one really wants the mundane.

No. It's not just female and male. Hope that was a typo! Crossing fingers.
And I don't just mean attractive in the physical sense, but also personality-wise. And there is a reason why I said whichever ElijahRyne writes better. As in, whichever he can make more real.
Please make sure you understand my comment before posting criticism of it.

@TheMonotonePuppet I feel comfortable writing for all three, they each entail different directions and conflicts, so I don’t know which to choose.
Dang. I don't know which one to choose... I guess I'd choose male or enby because there are so many GL relative to BL and enby love doesn't even exist. Just to mix it up? But I also don't know if you have fleshed out the female choice more than the others, in which case you should choose that one...
GAAAAAAAAAHHH!
I'm not helping, am I?

I understand what you said I just think it’s easy to just write your ideal type of person for both genders or non-binary

There was an Anime?
What am I saying... Of COURSE there was an Anime.
Yeah, all I remember is that it was a harem anime where the first love interest was a vampire, and that one of the love interests was an alien piloting a robot body to record the abilities of earth.

Wait, are they going to be like "okay we don't get along but we don't wanna screw this up with new mutual datefriend, time to pretend we're still dating?"

write what you want. If you want the mutual friend to be male and have a bisexual story with the boyfriend, then thats cool. I can understand why you would be hesitant about gay/bisexual romance as that would be pretty niche, and not have as big a following as a hetero romance.

At the end of the day, its your creation. Create what makes YOU happy, fuck the readers

this sounds like a clasic rom com trope, in which case it should be male to put the decision power onto the female lead
