I write mysteries. I had two readers decide one of my characters was the killer. He wasn't (but might have been). Having two readers take the time to consider who the killer might be seemed like success to me. Or, put another way, reader engagement defines success for me. I mean really - what are the chances of any of us getting trad published, and even if that miracle happened, what are the odds we would sell more than a few books? So fame and fortune ain't coming our way. What might come our way? A few readers who care enough to spend some time with our novels. That's enough for me.

It really depends on what you consider success. As someone who's doing this as a hobby, it was when I had readers in my comments debating on what they thought was going to happen next.
YES! Seriously, that is still the best feeling IMO :blob_aww: seeing people invested enough to start theorizing was absolutely mind-blowing to me

i think it's successful enough if i enjoy writing them, especially at my own pace.

i don't think too much about the readers. let them come and go as they please. while sometimes people drop comments, it feels better to not expect them and just do my own thing most of the time.
