What's Your Special Story?

I just finished reading 'So, I'm a Spider, So what?' volume 16 yesterday after following the series for a while, and I can't even express what I felt back then. The ending was wonderful, and that story really holds a special place in my heart because I loved the writing style so much that it made me want to start writing. My first story was basically a light copy of it with many stolen elements

I was wondering if any of you share the same experience, and if so, what's your special story, the one that got you into writing?

It's been years since I've started this writers journey and the inspirations that got me started although still prominent (One piece, Final Fantasy 13, verses 13 and Kingdom hearts) I'd say the special story for me has got to be The Wheel of Time.

It just covers so much on the interpersonal scale as well as being this epic tale of a chosen one's struggle to rise up to the insane expiations set upon them. I've seen a lot of hero journeys I've never quite seen one that delves into the personal struggle of the trope so well. Being someone who loves mixing the interpersonal with the epic spectral I'd say it's one of my biggest inspiration to keep writing at this point.

So, I started writing because I got fed up and made my own story instead.

I'm gonna have to say Worm. The cathartic effect of all the freaking crap that happens in that story has a strangely refreshing and enlightening effect.

For those who don't know, catharsis is the release of emotion (typically negative). In the case of books with a cathartic effect, it would be the book helping you to experience a lot of very negative emotions, and in doing so it gives you a relieving feeling afterward.

Worm involves some of the most extreme suffering you can put a character through, and the catharsis you feel after all of it is really something special. I especially like how, as much as you identify with the protagonist of the series, the story leaves things off in a way where you never want to see her in this author's works again, because seeing her again would mean dragging her back into all that suffering and she deserves to be released from that more than anyone else in this setting.

(In other words, it's exactly because you come to care about her so much that you absolutely do not want to see her return to action any time again in the future. You see those dejected heroes who just want to be left alone after going into retirement? Well, Tailor from Worm is the one character for whom it would make perfect sense for them to be dejected after their journey, but you as the reader wind up saying "Good! She's been through enough! Leave the poor girl alone!")

Good question! For me I‘d say probably Kuma Kuma Kuma Bear by Kumanano.

I definitely don’t have over 12 references (and counting) to it in my writing. Definitely. (It makes like up 15% of all the references in my writing I’ve made…)

Anyways, I like the style and ridiculousness and that reflects in my writing. I also might have stolen an entire party of adventurers from it…

Although I take a lot of inspiration from Kuma Kuma Kuma Bear, it’s only one if my many sources. It was also the first webnovel I read so it‘s got a special place in my heart.

I wanted to be a writer since childhood. That dream ended in high school for different reasons, and my life took a different turn. I picked up the profession again after getting to the point of "I can do better" and started writing in English out of spite and frustration.

Take it as my own kind of midlife crisis.

2. I had ideas in my head, and wanted them to become stories.

And I have to say, Spider is probably my favorite story so far, not counting Steins;Gate. But the ending for the web novel was pure garbage. So many questions unanswered.
I heard that the ending for the light novel is better, so I'll probably come back to that later.

Is it odd that I don't really have that "one thing" that inspired me into writing? Like yeah, I am inspired by stuff, but it all depends on my mood. One moment I could read a mindless comedy and want to write one myself, and the next I drop it because I feel like crippling fictional characters and making them suffer.


Tho, I guess I just like reading. And I liked reading so much that I wanted to read books that don't exist yet, so I attempt to write them myself.(and fail).

My special book(s) is Adam Blade's Beast Quest series. As a kid, I hated books and reading because, for some reason, people in my country decided classic literature must be 'the' starting point for any kid who wanted to read. I got myself a reading habit thanks to Adam Blade's books, and I got pretty into Kaijus/Fantasy.
How I started writing is completely unrelated to this though.

I saw this imagine in one very bored day of quarantine and said "I can make a story about this image" and started writing without any prior experience or knowledge.

The Epic of Gilgamesh, there is something about being the oldest piece of literature make it special. For me, it open my eyes up to the enduring quality of a story, for over 5000 years it persisted.

And I want to write a story that would live a fraction of that time.
