The opening ceremonies were pretty boring. While there were good parts to it (like when the athletes for each country were welcomed while riding on boats), the parts of the ceremony where Lady Gaga was singing while dressing the way she was and the outfits of some of the models of the fashion show were wearing were very inappropriate for public television were pretty cringe to me. Once all of the boats made their appearances (when the athletes representing the United States made their appearance), I stopped watching the ceremony as a whole. Overall, it was a boring opening ceremony.

As for the actual event that is taking place, I really have not been following any of the sports that have been taking place so far since the sports that I sometimes watch have not started yet. The opening ceremony really soured the mood for me.

Turns out we learned that it's okay to for a man to beat up a woman as long as it's in the olympics. They will be defended for doing so by certain people.

Still wouldn't be fair unless they allowed and encourage female boxers to be on perma steroids lmao
- swimming trial had been delayed a day due to rain spilling shit in the Seine. Belgian athlete said she has seen some shits under a bridge
- streets are still deserted, fences are still locking people down, restaurants and cafes are fuming

next week, the swimming trials will be longer. We'll see if the swimmers survive then

My wife usually loves the Olympics and has them running on the TV in the background for the entire duration, but that opening ceremony turned her off so badly she has just followed a few headlines and, if she turns the TV on, it is to watch Korean television "dramedy" or historical or historical fantasy series. Since I rarely care, but sometimes get sucked in on some events (bobsledding, curling, some of the synchronized team stuff) I'm fine with this... :D

TIL that starting in 2016, there has been an Olympic Refugee team, composed solely of athletes who are refugees from multiple different nation of origin. In 2016 there were 10 athletes, this year there are 37. There has never been a Winter Olympic Refugee team.
Cindy Ngamba will be the first member of this team to earn a medal. She is a boxer and has advanced far enough to get at least a bronze medal.
