Depends - if I want something subtle, a ghost or other spirit creature that can manifest at need but usually just tags along invisibly. Or maybe a classic bugbear - a creature that seems tiny, insignificant, even cute, from a distance or when calm, but turns into a massive raving brute when enraged.

If I don't want subtle, Iron Guards - a squad of animated, semi-sentient suits of full plate mail armed appropriately (or robots who look like them if magic does not apply).

Living Armor was definitely my first thought. Whether it's a slime type, golem type, ghost type, or Mecha type, doesn't matter. There's nothing better as a guard than one that directly shields you from attacks without hindering your mobility (since you can literally just wear it).

Death Knights, Golems, Elementals, Mimics, Therianthropes and small bitey things seem like they could all be useful for various reasons.

But my 'homebrew' pick is Alraune. Life magic for healing, entangle and barriers; multiattack with their vines and thorns; you can retreat to their flower as a sort of panic room in an emergency, and they can still move around while it's closed; AoE pollen and spore attacks for 'politely' dealing with crowds and swarm attackers; and very friendly and useful outside of battle as well!

Some sort of shape Shifter. Take on the guise of any person allowing them to accompany you no matter what setting you find yourself in, can appear strong to dissuade confrontation or appear meager and weak to lure out foes. Can take on appearance of yourself to lure attackers away from you or take on appearance of enemies to distract or fool other enemies.

Alraune are dangerous creatures especially on men and considering their species they have dangerous crowd attacking skills

I was going to suggest water elemental. But it is mostly the same kind of benefits.

I would also add that having a 100% liquid body mitigates most any ranged assassination attempts.
