Writing What makes a good smut scene?

Emotions are what makes a sex scene good. Describing how the characters feel, their thoughts about each other, etc. Unlike visual sex, you have to remember that written sex has to use the reader's imagination. You don't have to describe everything meticulously, and leaving some things for the readers' imagination is ideal.

In short, describe enough details to create a scene in the mind, and then focus on the emotions and actions of the characters. Dialogue must also be used sparingly to not break the flow of the scene.

I have far more of an expert opinion than I should on this, but...

It depends a lot on the kind of scene you want to write. If your character is a horny bastard who is only in it to get off, then you're going to be focusing on the physical nature of what's happening. Boobs, butts, orgasms, etc. But if the characters have more of an emotional connection to one another then you'll want to focus more on the sensuality of it. The physical actions aren't that important (Even in the more physical scenes, I might add. Sure, it's cool spending paragraphs upon paragraphs showing the reader exactly how the two or more people are getting down to business, but sometimes just briefly explaining a situation and letting the imagination run is good enough) especially when the two are in love. If you're having a lovey-dovey scene you can just describe the stripping- if any exists- and describe a lot of abstract stuff about it until you're satisfied.

If anything, the more abstract scenes can be more fun to read if you're reading with both hands above the waist. If you're reading with one hand under the covers/in your pants, well, you're probably more interested in the actions than the context of the scene, anyway.

I'll parrot the sentiment I saw while scrolling down. Don't be a virgin if you want to write compelling smut, your imagination and porn will only take you so far.

Exceptionally great descriptions and sexual and/or romantic tension usually do the trick.

I am curious since I heard people said a lot of smut on SH aren’t good.

Thus, I want to go into details. What makes a good smut scene? And why some are bad?

A good smut scene is easy for the reader to to visualize with play by play descriptions, and paced just slow enough to get the reader hot.

When done right, the scene will get the reader off.
