I love characters who are cold and ruthless toward their enemies but warm and protective when it comes to their friends and family. I prefer those who are intelligent and don’t blindly follow a sense of justice without considering the consequences of their actions.

My favorite type of protagonist is one who uses a sword and follows their own path. They don't back down from fights, adapt to various situations, and go to great lengths to protect those they care about. They aren't driven by a 'hero of justice' syndrome (but still help others anyway), and while they aren't highly intelligent, they aren't stupid either.

I hate them all equally, I read so I can gloat over their sufferings!

Ones with a sense of humor. An inappropriate sense of humor occasionally reined in may be best, but really just a sense of humor.

The one who has to struggle and pushes through despite that. With sark/sassy humor equal to said struggles.

The original post can't help but remind me of a bunch of people I talked to a while back who just, absolutely insisted it was impossible for a well written character to care about one person and be ruthless to another. I have no idea why, it was absolutely infuriating trying to get through to them that empathy isnt 100% absolute and equally applicable to every single person in existance.

At any rate, I tend to like one a few things. One is paladin-esque characters with boatloads of self-righteousness, conviction, and the actual moral fiber to back it up. Those aren't too common since people tend to prefer their protagonists being 'flawed' and 'relatable' and stuff, and if they do want a character to be morally flawless they generally don't like making them self-confident and a bit conceited to go along with it.

Another would be characters whose only interest is protecting their kin, with absolutely no care for anything beyond that.

And lastly I honestly have a soft spot for just bloodthirsty blood knight types.

Theres a few more I like in theory but, in practice the execution to make me like them is so specific that I dont really trust any writer to do so and as a result just end up preferring that it's not done. But at least in theory I like characters who are entirely hopeless, accursed from the day they're born, etc. and compensate through sheer spite. To be clear thats not just like a character down on their luck who becomes hard and ruthless I mean more like, a character who has consistently only known misery their entire existance but will never cave or budge even an inch. Stubborn to the point of idiocy, uncompromising to a fault.

Outside of Romance? A calculating person. One who choose to maintain the living cogs to achieve the goal he/she wanted, while at the same time willing to maintain a good relationships with others

Characters with contradictions between how they act and how they feel.
Skilled, but filled with poor self-esteem doubts,
Generous and self-sacrificing, but bitter about it,
Silly/Light-hearted fun, but tragic,
Independent, but cares about what others think of them.

Vampires. They are the sauce of life.

If you're asking about personality, I like antihero vampire mc. Either this, or I like an MC who's cute and able to be captured by a yandere vampire.

Break the cutie!

Seriously though, it is a hard question to answer. But I suppose I like characters that imbue the characteristic of ordinariness - which is unfortunately a bit of a vague description. Hmm, like even if it is peeking through only so often, I want to feel that they and I aren't so different. The description that shouldn't wore out no matter how extraordinary the feat is. Oh, and Some moe elements can be nice too, although nothing overtly.

Ones that don't constantly misunderstand everything. I do like protagonists who are too dumb to live but when its 300 chapters of misunderstandings, I get testy.

I also like unreliable narrators. Especially if there are background details that hint at what the Protagonist doesn't know.
