I was thinking about different books and their powers systems because I wanted to start writing a novel and I wanted to know what you guys think the best power system is (Mana, qi, quirks, ecs).

I like a vanilla fantasy Mana system.

I like the one that David Eddings’ magic system called “the will and the word”. Magic works by simply willing it to then invoking it with a word. Sure, not everyone can use magic and there is sort of “mana” though it isn’t explicitly stated. Also, you can’t make things cease to exist; if you try it backfires.

I used a modified version of this system for my magic system. Not sure which one I like better.

"luck system"

Close 2nd place, that i wish i could see
"see the future system"
but not like nowadays "livestream x fortune tell your future for clients"
but more like a living system that tell AND advise, like a certain old novel i once saw T_T

3rd
faith system

4th

Oh just fighting "categories"
.......vanilla mana too

or
"superpower in urban" (quirk, urg i dislike the word) but in a more "comedy tone"
basically "Charlotte" anime style with maluses but not tragedy but trolling conditions
= fav novel, "Strongest couple" where MC can beat anyone/anything named Li Xiantian + FL that can rename anything/anyone

To me, there is no single best power system, in any meaning of that word. I lean more towards some than to others, but I don't have any real favorites, unless you count lack of any system as one.

It's very hard to find that in modern web- and light novels, but I personally prefer when magic and generally powers are not defined in any clear way in a story. What I am doing in my own is that magic by itself is uncontrollable for people, and only by introducing a system it is possible for them to utilize it and grow in power.

Thing is, it doesn't really matter to me what that system is as long as it fits the setting. I'm using a realistic and vague system that has only skills (which is not really what I like the most, but I can't be bothered to make something more crunchy), but it could be any other, all the way from eldritch magic or tattoos to game-like litRPG or classic wizardry. There are only many things I don't like, such as using a health stat as a basis for health and vitality, not its representation, but that's a problem with execution, not the power system itself.

Some of the best are the legendary mechanic , I Became a Progenitor Vampire and the young master in the shadows.
Some other good mentions are some Japanese system novels like "I Became the Strongest With The Failure Frame【Abnormal State Skill】As I Devastated Everything"
I prefer cultivation power system with real difference in each ranks or realm.
There is no system in that. Just cultivation ranks.
I like ranks too , cultivation or not. Like one punch man.
Talking and smart Chinese systems are just huge turn off.

I think you misinterpret power system and system. If you didn't then you may not read enough cultivation stories or don't understand what a power system in a story is.

It's mostly 9 big ranks and 9 small ranks in all big ranks.

I tend to prefer mana power structures, but only because I'm used to the stories written with them.

My story uses four base components (Sort of: matter/biomass, energy/psychic, mana, faith/luck) to combine and create a bunch of different types of 'magic'.

For me, it entirely depends on the type of genre I'm writing/reading.
If it's a fantasy one, then I typically have a magic and aura system - one is obviously where you use magic, the other is where you develop the body and gain internal power.
For interstellar, I quite like spirit/soul/psychic power or sentinel/guide systems. For both, I like it when the power they have can grow if the person cultivates/trains it well enough.
For cultivation ones, I quite like the system where through meditation and hard physical training they gain power - strengthening their soul and body in harmony. So it starts off with removing blatant impurities, cleansing the body, then gathering power, then condensing that power, then conditioning the body to withstand containing more of that power, then repeating the process all over again...eventually gaining an immortal body and soul.

If I had to decide on what I thought was the best system overall, though...
*thinks*
...hmm...probably the interstellar one.
At least it's all down to your own effort, while everyone has the opportunity to develop it, while not being too ridiculous in what can be done with it.
Not sure if I explained it well enough, though...
:blob_no:

To go back to the magic one, I prefer it when a person specialises in one or possibly two elements as opposed to all the elements. Since everyone has an affinity to something in real life, it would make sense if such affinities existed for magical elements, too; whether it be because of their personality, body, personal choice (like you pick the element you like the sound of the most), or something else.

i really like the magic system in magicka since it lets you come up with lots of nonsensical and cool moves by combining random shit

I'd have to say the indisputable best power system is Parahumans. The one and only possible issue that can be called out about it is the fact that the Parahumans universe is so brutal it presents a high barrier to entry for anyone wanting to get into that writer's material, but it is incredibly well thought-out and interesting in it's application.

Basically, it's a super-powers system (like quirks) in which people get their super powers from alien entities that parasitically infect the brains of the hosts. But, even after infection, they need the host to enter a state of extreme stress before they can awaken. Upon awakening, they gain a power that is a combination of 3 factors. 1. The form of power the parasite has. The power that the parasite has is always of a world-destroying level and way too much for any human to take, so they can only acquire a miniscule portion of it. 2. The person's personal understanding of the world which will filter and interpret the manner in which that portion of the alien's power manifests, and 3. The kind of situation that caused them to be pushed to a large enough level of stress for the parasite to take root in the first place.

(In Worm, the 1st in the parahumans universe, the MC of the series had the "Queen" parasite. It has the power to mind-control all living things. The MC's understanding of the power caused her interpretation of that power to become limited to arthropods only (insects, worms, crabs, arachnids and other things of this sort) because she interpreted it as "insect queen," and then the stressful situation she was in gave her the extra powers to share the senses of the things she's controlling. This allowed her to use her bugs for scouting, but also to effectively have eyes on the back of her head and "hands" on every person's elbows. (If you've ever had martial arts training, that "hands on the elbows" part is almost more valuable than eyes on the back of your head. It pretty much lets you know what they're doing at the very beginning of their movement and react instantly. So, while you're making the preparatory movements to get ready to throw a punch, she's already in the process of dodging it.))

Pre Shippuden Naruto had a perfect power system. After that it's basically Dragon Ball Z but even more gay somehow.
