Lore in Fiction

Lore is a system of knowledge, a collection of stories, mythology, and world history that provides the backdrop for what is happening today. Lore is the worldbuilding that makes fiction feel immersive, vivid, and narratively realistic.

The Naruto series features chakra, tailed beasts (bijuu), and the history of ninjas as lore.

The One Piece series features devil fruits, the history of lost civilisations, and the legendary treasure (One Piece) as lore.

The Death Note series features the Death Note, the world of shinigami and humans as lore.

The LOTR series features rings of power, the history of Middle-earth, the language of the elves, the genealogy of kings, and the creation of the world as lore.

Almost all major series have lore that makes the story unique, meaningful, and profound. Lore is more than just aesthetics; it is also an extension of the author's well-thought-out story plan, promising a comprehensive series while also setting the pace of the story's conflict.

Without lore, fiction (specifically the fantasy genre) usually has difficulty determining the direction of the story. It's not absolute. But, with lore, conflict and plot would move within the world's internal logic, gradually revealing layers of lore, providing a complete picture of the world.

So, my question is, what is the lore in your fiction?

Critical note:
If you ask me what the lore in my fiction is:
Blood Rose Princess series: A world with amnesia for the sins of tyranny, the Disaster Princesses who are actually the living wounds of the world itself… and what deepest secret does the Eldora world hide?

Ancient family lineages, cursed by cosmic gods, reign power over the world, cycling through offspring reincarnated from their ancestors ..until that cycle is suddenly broken, throwing the entire universe, its realms, and everything we know, into chaos.

The world's most powerful magical archiver finds a new friend in a maid that happens to be another version of her old master, who'd perished in a misfortunate accident.

Death is only the beginning when every human has the chance to be revived, and reborn; No matter how often it is they die. -Though, they may, or may not be satisfied with the locale. "Having powers is pretty cool though! Kind of, sort of.."

cultivators burnt through every power source so they all died. then people found a new power source and are currently figuring out how to run out of that too.

Cultivators are ruining the planet, because the cost of increasing chi is ruining the environment.

World started getting hit by Waves of cosmic energy which Altered living beings and natural laws to closely resemeble a comic book universe. As you'd expect, the majority of humanity fucking died when Godzillas came out of the oceans. Things have mostly stabilized off of the coasts 30 years later, and more powerful Altereds now work as Guardians against the new threats in the world. The indestructible protagonist's girlcock may or may not be related to the Waves.

There are endless paths to power, for one's power is shaped by one's will and the actions one takes, by how you strive and how you contest your will and spirit against the world and against the will and spirit of others.

A wizard enhances their mind and knowledge to let them cast spells.

A warrior enhances their body and skill to let them perform superhuman feats.

And yet, body and mind can not be enhanced alone. A powerful wizard's body is stronger and faster than when they were an apprentice. A powerful warrior's mind is more aware of the world around them and operates faster, enabling them to act and react faster than they could as a squire.

But there are no short cuts. Power must be built up and earned. You can not fully wield the powers of a legendary sword until you yourself posses similar might. And to attempt to wield power against others is to contest against their spirit and will as well as their body.

A curse known as "The Rusting" is rapidly corroding all metal in the universe, and despite no one knowing how it started, the Emperor of one of the human governments has claimed responsibility for manufacturing it.
The Emperor used a mystical wish-granting robot head to resurrect his son after accidentally killing him in a fire, but the process ended up causing the Rusting because he worded the wish in a vague and panicked way.

I'm actually writing a "series" for the lore and history of the setting for all of my stories on here. As for the lore stuff included in that, and my other works, here's a general rundown of the topics covered.
Was there anything in particular you were curious about, El, or were you just asking for the lore elements included in the stories?

Worlds [Planets], Dimensions [Cosmological Planes of Existence, and corresponding rules for travel between them], Characters, Nations ("Modern-Era" Kingdoms, Empires, and Countries), Cities, Towns, Noble Houses, Languages, Cultures, Ancestries/Races, Magic System, Pantheon, Creation Mythos, Pre-Creation Mythos, "Modern-Era" Mythos and Legends, Lost Empires, Items and Legendary Relics, LitRPG / Game mechanics and systems, Timelines and Calendars, History (Pre-recorded and recorded), Major Historical Events, Monsters/Mythical Beasts.

For clarity: "Modern-Era" refers to the present-day state of the world in-question. Lost Empires refers to worlds / places akin to the myths about Atlantis

Don't explicitly explain spoilers. Lore is a major event that serves as the secret ingredient to your narrative. Please explain it in general terms, as in the example above, without going into further detail.

The mythology of the Azra’il saga (my collection of fanfics) doesn't belong to a single world. Each fanfic presents its own mythology, shaped by the rules of that universe, but they are all connected by the same constant: an eternal soul that reincarnates, traverses different systems, and carries emotional echoes from past lives.

Vampires! ? Lots of their lore come from their blood, such as the color being black, that they “sing,” etc. Haven’t posted the reveals in chapters yet (lord I’m so slow) so I’ll just do the categories of these

Commoners ?️??️: lowest level, most common (lol), look like regular humans but pasty, has retractable claws and fangs. Heightened senses, speed, strength. People treat them like annoying but dangerous pests. Does not abide by invitation rule. Greatly damaged by silver and cannot (or veeeery slowly) regenerate from it.

Nobles ???: vampire lords (boss fights), rare, glowing golden eyes, exponentially more dangerous than commoners, can turn humans into commoners (spawn) through blood exchange—consent not needed. Abides by invitation rule. Regenerates faster from silver (though it depends on the damage).

??? ???: red eyes. (Un)godly strength and speed. Nothing else known (so far). Only one has been seen so far…

There’s also vampire hunters, their guilds, court politics, noble houses, kingdom history, etc. etc. but those are (in my opinion) less interesting and more complicated, so I don’t feel like typing all that ??

My story is fanfiction, so I’ll only go into the lore that is specific to my own story as opposed to the source material.

The space between is the place where entities that only arguably exist go when they can’t maintain a connection to the real world. Ghosts that never moved on but also can’t hold on. Monsters literally banished from reality. Gods that have been forgotten. Stories that everyone knows but may or may not have ever been true. All trapped in a void where there is no sensation except, occasionally, the voice of one of your neighbors.

They all want back in, and the few among them that have maintained some vague semblance of sanity form into factions based on how they wish to go about it whenever they find a crack to poke a finger through, as equal parts political faction and mutual support group. The ones who want to be benevolent protectors, the ones who wish to disseminate the old stories, the ones who wish to teach mortals how to call them, and the ones who will burn the world down if that means they might someday breathe real air.

One of these entities from that last category is a secondary antagonist, but these entities politicking and jockeying for position will be a major background element for the entire story.

History of the world (??? – Slavery – Golden Age – Dark Age – Modern Era), biochemical magic that powered world technology and personal magic that works like language syntax, philosophical artifacts, starring neutrophil and macrophage as eldritch abomination.

Story in a nutshell: Clash between two hobos who debate truth and falsehood.

Hmmm. I guess I'll put one of mine then.

Rising Steel Dynasty: It's the start of Industrial Revolution, and the nobilities are starting to change. Resist the change, and they'll be left behind to be looked like some backwater boondocks wearing a mantle. Going along with the change and you'll be the richest noble in an empire, and the crown will give you favor more than anyone else. Though, that's not without any cost. Centralization puts all nobles on a leash by the crown, and it's up to one noble who can influence the crown's course on the prosperity of the empire.

In the beginning was The Maelstrom, the Storm of All That Could Be But Never Was. Within this, the Principles of Creation and Destruction waged an eternal conflict, a stalemate ended only when Creation stole an element of Destruction and used it to create the ultimate combined act of Creation and Destruction, an eruption that echoed through all of Creation and gave birth to a multitude of universes. Each universe developed with its own rules, its own versions of the Two Principles, even its own distorted versions of the Creation Tale. Some have multiple gods, some have but one or a very small pantheon; some are a single, massive world, others a full universe. All things became real in that moment of combined Creation and Destruction.
