I will not hire an American artist. Local artists (art students, no degree, recent graduates) will draw a good novel cover for $20 equivalent in local currency. Or if you want a professional (degree, years of work experience), $60.
An American artist will want $200 for the same. Or more.

Of course, if you want generic anime waifu, you can get it for as cheap as $2. Double if she is naked. They slap those together in under an hour.
When I say $20, I mean proper art.

Not that I could hire one, lost my job recently.

The overcharging is real, I completely understand.

And lack of professionalism can also be a problem I've heard. Thankfully those I commissioned have never really done either to me.

Mostly art commissio.
Ah, again it really depends. A portrait or painting can be decently expensive but I’m assuming you mean for an electronic commission. Typically you are paying for the time and materials but electronic art kind of disregards the material aspect. At that point it’s really down to the complexity of the art and the fame or skill of the artist in question.

The outreach and accessibility artists have via the internet means the price is decreased, materials are typically the biggest expense in the price of a painting, and most artists aren’t very notable or have exceptional skill.

Anything more than 100 usd for any singular electronic artwork is basically a waste considering it is easily copied, has no physical price, the effort required is minimal in comparison, you don’t actually own it, and most internet “artists” aren’t classically trained anymore. That’s not to say that the artist is unskilled or the art isn’t good, instead that the tangible price decreases exponentially.

As a side note 100 usd is on the high end for any artwork, assuming that the work is a high-quality and detailed representation of a single character from a trained artist (one with a degree). A similar quality and detailed scene could go for 200-250 usd. Multiple simple renditions should never be more than 100 usd unless the quantity goes strongly into the double digits.

Typically I would look at art school students as they are looking for any extra cash they can get and you can be guaranteed that they will have some sort of training. A.I. is often free to use and they can give a decent works with a bit of trial and error.

0 because I can now draw it myself.

Not to mention, last time I commissioned someone for art (this was back when I was still not very confident with my own work), I got practically scammed.

I paid about $5 to an artist in a local con and never got the drawing coz his shop already closed when I returned. When I messaged him online to ask if I can get it, he showed me the work, which is just a half-assed ink drawing, then immediately blocked me. Sadge.

well, The highest comm I ever did was $17,500. I was running inker for a team, for about $35-45 per page and there was like 40 chapters to ink lol. Clients are willing to pay as long as it fits in their paycheck and feel like they wanna give you something extra. Never over charge, just charge how you think you should charge, you can ask other people who are more experienced for pricings but anyways keep up the grind! You will reach a level of art where your single artwork will be worth more than $500.

I don't know. I'd say I could easily fish six figures off this masterpiece.

Highest I have paid for a single commission so far is around 350 including tip. But I don't really have a limit if it's something I want. Most expensive thing I have commissioned is several pages in a comic style for around 2.5k

I want to, but I'm very exacting about what I want, and rather see what I'm purchasing beforehand. But I'm good with $50 or 50000₩ which are basically the same amounts.... give or take.
