What is a standard/acceptable amount of chapters to have backlogged?

I write a lot in my spare time and I don't have the audience to justify posting advanced chapters on platforms like Patreon, what is a good amount of backlog to have scheduled before it becomes 'too much'? Should I consider posting more than once a day if my backlog gets too stacked up?

It depends on you if you want to post or not. But having 10 chapters of backlog is not that bad.

Yes.

There's no one set limit to backlog. 10, 20, 50, 100. Whatever works best for you until you're ready to start posting them.

Posting twice is a good idea if you have large backlog. On the other hand, a short backlog makes it easier to catch and fix any plot holes you might miss.

Hope this answer helps.

It does help, thank you. I currently have 15~ backlogged chapters, the reason I'm unsure about double posting is I'm new the site and don't want to be seen as a chapter spammer lol

I mean it is entirely personal preference? I know people who have big backlogs and people who don't have any at all.

I like to have a backlog. I post two chapters a week, and any chapters extra becomes backlog. This backlog has been as big as forty chapters and there has been periods were in has been non-existent.

I don't know what you would call the average, as most authors don't say how big their personal backlog is, but 10 is a healthy amount if you are starting.

My rule of thumb is trying having a backlog big enough that I can keep posting for at least 2~3 weeks without writing. In case of sicknesses or just burnout. Not that I reach that goal most of the time :sweating_profusely:

When I started here, I wouldn't post until I had at least ten chapters down. Then it dropped to five and I posted new chapters whenever I had a five chapter backlog.
Then I entered a contest (didn't win) on HoneyFeed, and pretty much posted live.
Then I got involved with Pocket FM and haven't posted much of anything anywhere else.

A backlog is basically a safety cushion for you, so you can keep posting consistently even if you're not writing new chapters for any reason. If you post once a day and have ten chapters in a backlog, you basically have ten days you can get away with without writing, before it impacts your readers. If you post twice a week, your safety net is a full month.
So it's really about what you think is a good number for you.
