First of all, it’s a website on the domain “4chan.org”. It’s pretty famous for things like the origin of the group Anonymous or the recent Twitch leak and is known to have a pretty toxic community (or at least that’s what I heard). But aside from all that it’s basically what you said, you post stuff there and hope you get famous, except you don’t have to create an account for that (I’m not really sure why you wanna get famous while being anonymous but ok). The boards are a divided and are a little bit like Reddit. As an example the /a/ board for anime.

Since everyone is anonymous, you can say what you truly feel, this lead to the "toxic" reputation. But 4chan is a place that entirely rejects the idea of "toxic" behavior. Almost everything is fair game and each board has it's own unique culture. This level of freedom is why 4channers spawn a majority of all good internet memes, although quality has gone down in recent years.

4Chan is a Bastion of Free Speech TM. While there are indeed good people there who know about quality fiction/unknown nerd stuff (got introduced to Nechronica there), it's known to house edgelords, people who think racial epithets are funny in EVERY context, and people that that actually mean the hard r when they say it, and think that there's a secret underground merchant mafia running the world that's hell bent on wiping out the most represented group of humans on the planet. If this was the only thing that earned the site its less than sterling reputation, I'd have a more "meh" opinion of it, but 4Chan is also the broodnest of actual doxxing, cybercrime, and brigading campaigns.

My advice, just go to the site yourself and browse (not at work, please) to get a better understanding and clean impression that isn't primed by either us, or prior research.

To me 4chan is a weird site. It's got everything from people who coordinate bullying a minor, to getting justice for a highschool drunken unconsenting gb victim. Everything from racists to weebs.

The last time I used it was before streaming anime like Crunchyroll and myanimelist existed and it and hongfire were the only sites where talk about anime existed. So around when World of Warcraft first launched and everyone pirated anime.
