What if there was a genre named, 'Character.'

In horror genre for instance, the books are about horror, but in Character genre, the books would be about a set of charcters. Once you met and got to know them, they would appear in completely different stories, differing genres, same characters, different story.
Anybody like the idea?

Realistically, that wouldn’t work due to copyright and capitalism. Think of it like this: Arthurian Legends and King Arthur (along with his known allies and enemies) are practically used like a genre rather than fan fiction. You know what to expect once ‘King Arthur’ is being used.

Maybe not the specifics of the character, but it is buffed by the preconception people have of this figure. How mighty he is, leadership, etc… But if I just wrote someone with the ‘Character Genre’ of a niche character who has no well-known predisposition, no one would understand what’s being subverted or played straight.

The popularity of certain tropes is why we do certain things in this day and age. Writing’s rules mostly based off what’s popularly used. You can internally try this, but it’ll be hard to get others to understand what you mean without this specific context (which they may or may not be interested in).

It's as simple as having the same cast of characters in different stories.

But on second thought, having a genre named character feels like an overcomplication of terms. It would be like having genre called genre or a genre called exposition. So umm, how about not calling it a genre? Ughh, I gotta get back to writing.

So you say that the same characters should be used for entirely different genres and stories? But not archetypes but characters with detailed personalities?

That could be interesting because i would explore how a personality could be created or behave in different scenarios but outside of such a interest I simply see little reason to do anything with it, it definitely doesn't justify a genre but maybe a tag? Even then others have already pointed out that it isn't much more than using archetypes.

So you mean something sort of like the filler episodes from way earlier on in one piece, where the crew was in a completely different setting (like Luffy being a cop in feudal Japan)? But the whole series is just swapping to a new setting after a somewhat short self-contained story?

Final Fantasy XII/Type-0 creator said that he wants to have his characters as "actors" rather than characters. Same name, same look, same personality, but different stories, timelines, etc on each game. The main character of the Final Fantasy movie (Spirits Within) was also made with that concept in mind.

Of course, none of them really took off, so the concept was never implemented despite how much he was pushing it. I'm not sure what the appeal of the concept was too.

Example: This is a hidden trailer inside of FF Type-0, supposedly it's for the next game in the series, Type-1. The blonde guy in the trailer is the same blonde guy in Type-0, Ace. But, with a whole different character setting altogether. (Samurai stuff or idk)

Oh right, another great example would be Muv-Luv

It sounds more like one of those Multiverse / Parallel Universe settings. I don't really write but it sounds like a drag to make, but hey it worked on the Fate Series.
