I always listen to specific genres to set the atmosphere and tone of my writing!
Most of them are Jazz and classical, with a mix of electronic music

Here are some examples:
My way of life
Over and over (the world we knew)
As the world caves in
Sway
Autumn leaves
Rachmaninoff piano concerto 2
Sibelius concerto in D minor op.47
Fontaine theme
And game music like Arcaea Final Verdict

I think you can guess the premises of my story :blob_cookie: Feel free to drop some song suggestions!

Okay since were on this topic, do yall read while listening to music too?

Depends. I have a playlist of vocaloid music that i hear so much it became background noise. I also listen to a cover of them made by chogakusei, his voice helps me focus. Then, there are the classical musics—sometimes I listen to baroque playlist or evangelion's canon in d on loop (no, i don't watch evangelion though i'm interested to. This particular rendition just clicks right for me).

I juggle these depending on my brainwave in the particular day because my head is fickle like that. When none of them helps me focus, i put livestreams for background noise. Having someone doing something with me often helps.

I can't write in tandem with listening music but it was a great inspiration to me so far. I've gone so far as to making playlists that in my opinion are close to the various moods I aim to convey in my writing -- like this one for example.

I had to create my own, but I tend to listen to Smash to pieces, Zayde Wolf, The Score, and others. Mostly High Energy metal. Due to the action I tend to listen to them so I can keep the pace up.

I've been learning german, so mostly german bands. Been listening to a bit of schandmaul, patty gurdy's german folk, rammstein, etc. also a bit of feuerschwanz and saltatio mortis (their viking metal hits hard).

Of course, operatic metal is always a good fallback for me. So Nightwish and Blackbriar. but really, I'll listen to anything that catches my attention, and that can vary with my mood and what I'm writing. During battle scenes, I tend to default more towards faster or harder music. Godsmack, Disturbed, Linkin Park. More emotional scenes, I tend to go more with bands like Gorillaz.

Usually music is a must when I write to fully focus and feel immersed in the scene I'm trying to write. I have like a dozen playlist, from cheerful fantasy adventure music, to epic things when i'm writing intense action... i dont really understand the people that can't write without listening to music

As always it depends but usually I leave some background medieval music for like three hours. It builds good ambiance. That or the voices in my head.

It really depends on what I'm writing. I also like to match the mood of the music to what I'm writing... or sometimes even the other way around :blob_hmm:

But when I'm doing non-fiction writing, like academic bullshit, I put on some nice, repetitive, and ear-piercing noise rock.

This was one of my go-to's back in college.

I listen to music on occasion. It mostly depends on my surroundings because I write mostly on my phone. If there is distracting crap around me then I put on music.
Other than that, I will put on music when I'm writing battle scenes.

In my humble opinion, I dont think it's a good habit.

Especially when I'm trying to set the tone for the story, Listening to music makes me more biased with the music I'm currently listening while reading what I wrote.

I create the story expecting the tone to match the music I'm listening before, only to realize the story I have written is "lacking" in tone.

For me, A story should be able to set tone, theme, mood, without a need of listening the music that the writer listens during writing.

Otherwise, music is good company when setting initial drafts and framework of the story, things that wont be affected by the tone of the music.

And something to know, I'm a person who's aware that I'm being affected by music too easily. I have to hold back the urge to turn on the music when writing.

I advise you to see for yourself whether writing with music or no music affect you whe youre teying to set the tone and mood of the writing.

I would rather use poem and poetries, which is known reliable method, and very effective to set the mood and tone in "writing", then I would try to rewrite them into the narrative text in my stories. Like sprinkling lemon aromatic into the room.
