What reasons or feelings motivates you to sink hours into creating visual artworks and improving at it? (drawing, painting, sculpture, 3D models, photography, montage, toilet paper tower stacking, etc.) What do you enjoy in your activity?

For those who don't practice any of those activities, what would attract you in these fields? And why do you choose not to dab into it?

---

I've seen threads about what motivates writers, but I don't remember seeing one for artist.

Anyway, to answer first, I draw because I like boobas

Please tell me that all artists aren't like that.

I'm not a visual artist, per se, but my face is a work of art.

I'm mostly similar to Zirrboy, but in addition, I've always wanted to be able to draw waifus and such. Bring my characters to life because I'm personally more of a visual person.

Heck, I confess that if only I had godlike skills in art, I wouldn't be here on this site writing novels and instead be at Webtoon or something.

Long shot, but there's also the chance to eventually monetize art enough that I can make a living out of it.

That way, I get to kinda sustain myself while not having to deal with all the stresses that come with an actual office-based job.

It’s relaxing and one day I want to create an image so ugly and bizzare it can kill people

I can't draw or make any form of art for shit, but I wish I could draw my characters. Too many ideas, not enough outlets.

My friends did it back in middle school, so I picked it up as a hobby too. I think, I like every other weeb, had the delusions to draw a manga in the future and make it big. Lack of skill prevented me.

So I practiced, and practiced, and...At some point, I was the only one left still drawing. :blob_teary:

I guess it's because I still had OCs left to draw that I didn't give up. It's fun to draw, but at the same time, it's pain. I still got these random uncontrollable impulses and strikes of inspiration to draw.

Funnily, I started to write because my lack of art skills. Now I illustrate my stories and my art skills kinda improved with it. But sadly not in a webtoon suited direction. :blob_happy::blob_neutral::blob_no:

Two reasons.
1) To explain what can't be said.
2) And something like "I have no mouth, but I must scream."

I haven't illustrated or painted in a while, but what I'll say is that some things you can visualize which are harder to describe with words. The immediate emotional impact of a piece is also great if it's done well, with colors, form and shade leeching into your brain to form a tantalizing whole.

with all kinds of media, I'd say there are stuff in your head that is best expressed as one medium over the rest. Some stories are best told written, some scenes transfer better visually, etc. I think really wanting to capture what's in my head in what I think is the best form for it to be expressed is what makes me draw... though I'm very far from talented in it yet, haha.

Also, when you create something nice, it's super satisfying. :blobtaco:

Thank you for all your replies!

I gather that:
-Many shares the taste and motivation to create their OC husbando and waifus
-Visual art conveys informations that are difficult to understand with just words. Just like how sciences use diagram to illustrate things.

-It is a great complement to narration, solidifying our fantasies.

:blob_hmm: What about people who just makes a single pieces that are disconnected from any narrative context? Is it just the satisfaction to create something nice?

I feel like most artists want to create a story to give life to their OC, and not just draw them for the sake of it. But most of them don't have the time to actually make a comic.

If I knew how to upload images from my phone, I would show the horrifying clay mask I made or the realistic eyeball drawing I tend to scribble out.
