Personally I don't read GL. The reason I don't is because I think GL has long ago been appropriated by men and heavily fetishized. Don't take me wrong, I like fetishized stories, I like smut and so on, but I don't want to read how two girls fingerbang and scissor each other in the first chapter, all while one of the 'girls' is a man inside. It's so creepy. Oh, and genderbend FUTA GL? Now that's plain idiotic. The only difference between straight and GL at this point are boobs. And the way they always pretend like men don't exist? That's weird. It's as if they want to monolize all the women all while self inserting as quasi women themselves. This legit scares me.

You might say, man I just read normal GL, one written by women. The problem here is, a local vampire told me those GL stories are built different. It's the most brutal, fucked up shit you will ever see. I'm a vanilla guy. Liking big booty milfs =\= liking hardcore bdsm torture. After leaning about GL written by women from my friends, I can't believe I say this... I am kind of happy that sites like RR censored it? :sweating_profusely: I am usually very pro-sex and anti-violence, but that type of GL is pro violent sex, yuck.

Also, I'm not super gung-ho about realism, it's not my hill to die upon. But man, GL at its core is such an unrealistic genre. Forget adding GB into the mix and use it as an isekai, a nothing burger that won't matter to the story in one chapter. No, my problem is much deeper. Multiple women agreeing on something is pure fantasy. Like, c'mon. And what if they have a GL harem? Bruh, that's just unrealistic.

So yeah... I don't want to read those super fetishized works. I believe in a you do you concept, at the same time, I think reading GL tells a lot about the personality of a reader.

But maybe I and my GL loving friends are wrong, do tell me what did I miss, why you like it? I won't judge you.

Some of the first books I ever read on this site were actually GL stories...
While I do think your experience with GL is hellish, I do think that there are some actually good GL out there.
For example, @Yairy is a really good author, her books got into trending several times, and each and every single one of them are GL without stuff like BDSM and sexual content is actually kept at a minimum.

It really depends on what other tags are included with the GL tag. Smutfics are at times rather out there at times as an author lets their creativity go wild. Erotica tends to be a bit more realistic but still fanciful in their portrayal. If you want easy reading, with heartwarming interactions you need to look at the more fluff related content.

The stuff you have seen about the fetishizing by male authors or the "dark romance" by female authors is in any genre.

I'm writing GL rn and I think Imma get stone if I canonized that the FMC used to date a guy. The community really hate male characters for sum reason
And by "community" I mean like, the ones that specifically search for the tag, not your avid readers

Well, you know, it's funny how you defend this with "You just have to look more", but like 99% of what I've seen and heard from my friends are stuff I've described.

Personally I don't read GL.
Then why are you making this thread?
I don't want to read how two girls fingerbang and scissor each other in the first chapter, all while one of the 'girls' is a man inside.
Weren't you telling us you want to write smut and all, even something about ntr? Really? Now this?

The problem here is, a local vampire told me those GL stories are built different. It's the most brutal, fucked up shit you will ever see.
??? Proof? Or something? Come on...

Liking big booty milfs =\= liking hardcore bdsm torture.
That's some big ass logical leap there m8

Really...? Really? Then why are you always here and not on RR forums? Riddle me that.
Also, I'm not super gung-ho about realism, it's not my hill to die upon. But man, GL at its core is such an unrealistic genre.
???? So... gays are now unrealistic?
Multiple women agreeing on something is pure fantasy.
Fuck off. Really.

I value relationships between women based on caring and embracing each other through hardship as 'sisters', like family (mother-daughter, older sister-younger sister), rather than romance. Stories like this make me cry.
Marry El Rose and Black Mist are wounded sisters in the past.

TYSM for showing me this book! I'll have to read it now - the premise is amazing!

Sorry for being somewhat rude, but not 100%?
And yes, pretty much 100% of what I have describes comes from my personal experience with GL. So I guess it's just contrasting perspectives here - pretty much always the case with opinions.
And I do want to say that I refuse to read anything that resembles porn or BDSM, so I can't exactly relate to your experiences except in that it does sound horrible. So, sorry, our opinions are different, I do agree with you on some points, so let's leave it at that and move on to more constructive topics. Please.

GL, or any non-hetero romance for that matter, is an act, i.e. the plot pusher. By itself, it's meaningless, because it's subjective enough to be in anywhere if the author wants to include it in their story. Therefore, the meaning of GL in the context of a story. Like a garnish on top of a cake, it doesn't affect the taste of the cake, but visual vise and preferences wise it makes a lot of difference.

You can literally do romance anywhere you want, because the symbols of romance are deeply embed in humanity's unconscious. It can sprout anywhere if the author wants to include. What matters are the characters and the worldbuilding, romance will emerge from it if it is intentionally done so.

I personally don't have preferences in GL. I only hate when the main cast is full of misandry, even if they were GB or whatever. If the context is interesting, and characters are great enough, and they have a great chemistry between each other, for me it's enough. Too bad that authors often fail at one of those criterias, and ruin the enjoyment out of their story.

Multiple women agreeing on something is pure fantasy.
I've said this millions of times, and I've still yet to be proven wrong in a group setting. The only time women agree as a collective, is when one woman becomes dominant by some unspoken metric women don't typically speak of or point out. I'm not even sure they realize they are doing it themselves And even then, it's not a true agreement, it's just following the head of the herd. But booooooy they get angry, deflect, and deny when you point that out from countless observations.
