My MC Nina is arrogant, self-righteous, weak, and cowardly. She has to overcome those flaws throughout the story.

MC1: anxiety, out of touch with her feelings, repressing trauma, unused to taking decisive action, impostor syndrome
Side-Character1A: always in her head, know-it-all, lack of confidence in (most) others, denial
SC1B: impulsive ditz, blabbermouth
SC1C: conflicted about everything, sees both sides of too many situations, tries to be responsible for everything, overworks

MC2: an incredibly bull-headed, determined idiot who constantly fails to notice manipulative strings being pulled

MC3: lack of self-confidence, impostor syndrome, naive
SC3: overconfident, thinks she always knows best

MC4: out of touch with own feelings and needs, clown persona to hide pain (slipping)
SC4: isolated, convinced nobody can understand her, keeps up a mask of cheerfulness to hide depression

The one work that I dropped is modelled after the typical peasant in medieval story.

As in illiterate, slow and shows signs of rejection to the changes of his normal, mundane life. James is also cowardly and prone to violent outburst as a pretense for courage. Helps a lot when he has the system that grants him power (for a lot of hidden costs).

Which is why I assigned the second MC, who is brash, annoying, excessively arrogant due to his past, into James' head. Think of an smug elitist who clawed his way up the ladder only to get shoved back down the societal hierarchy. It also does not help that unlike the standard helpful old grandpa for MCs, this motherfucker is actively trying to fuck with the village boy MC in order to get him to get off the driver's seat.

And yes, the fiasco is supposed to have MC fighting not only the overly aggressive people outside, but also the sealed demon on the inside.

He'll always lose more than he wins. Kill an enemy? Congrats, now half of the fief is your foe. Save a village? Good job, the villagers fear you. Turn a blind eye? Victims are more likely to blame him for not helping them than cursing at the ones that actually brought the pain.

What I was trying to show is that no matter what or how James do, he's fucked. He's getting more powerful, but he's definitely getting fucked.

How?
She's contradictory in her bad habits, that kind of means that when she's not being arrogant she's being a coward or vice versa.
Of course it's contradictory. Virtues and flaws are not absolutes. People can be selfless and genuinely kind to others and still be arrogant and self-righteous. And you can be intelligent independent of your values. Physically weak people can show strength of character, and cowards can still be brave. The only moment they can be brave is when they are scared. She has to realize her own flaws first before overcoming them and that's a struggle that takes time. :s_frown:

At least that's what I figure.

Flaws can be strengths in the right situations, and strengths can be flaws in the wrong situations. I'd call my MC adventurous, but also reckless at times. She's honest, but being open with the wrong people can cause trouble. That's why she has a bit of agoraphobia specific to business settings.

Doom Valley Prep School
Petra: Coward until her back is against the wall, or she's drugged. She also whines a bit.

Necromancer Unmanned
Keir: Definitely his ego and need to be in control. It can and has led him into bad situations and fights he didn't need to fight.

Ichiro is clueless despite having knowledge, can't think few steps ahead and simply goes with the flow without questioning it even when absurd things happen
