Maybe not the single most absurd, but pretty stupid.

Supernatural:
  • The MCs convince themselves they are saving others/the world from [insert evil of the season].
  • They get in way over their heads.
  • They do everything they can to get out of trouble, even when it's obviously a very stupid thing, and stop caring about everyone else (if they cared in the first place).
  • They usually somehow stop [evil of the season], but cause something even worse in the process.
  • The MCs convince themselves they are saving others/the world from [insert evil of the season], conveniently forgetting they were the ones who started it in the first place.
  • Repeat.

Though it is also one of my favorite plots, the plot to The Watchmen is pretty absurd - to prevent WWIII, the Smartest Man on the Planet(TM) creates a fake alien invasion, murdering a bunch of people in the process.
