I feel like writing a book set in Ancient Rome, during the days of the Republic. You know, when Hannibal crossed the Alps. But, I have no idea where to look for research. I need daily life, life of a soldier, the economy of the republic and so on. List me your best picks. Some books too, if they don't read like textbooks. Considering this book series will start after my trilogy is complete, I think I have plenty of time to do research. Currently, I am going to look at YouTube for some shorts.

The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire by Edward Gibbon. Oldish, but listened to it as audio... three years back? four? and its solid

EDIT: Caesar's commentaries are alos quite interesting, but seeing as they are set in the dying days of the republic they might not be as relevant. They do form a pretty picture about senatorial politics and generalship, tho.

EDIT2: While not directly Roman there was a history of Carthage I quite liked, including a view on the Hannibal wars as well as the eventual victory of Scipio Africanus and the razing of Carthage. I don't remember it's name rn tho. All of these i've listened to instead of read so idk how boring they'd be to you.

Channels on youtube like Invicta and Kings and Generals are pretty solid. My favorite would be SandRhoman History in regards to daily life, along with cooking channels that focus on ancient recipes. Bear in mind that not all videos pertain to the roman republic and empire. SandRhoman History does cite its sources for you to refer to, not too sure about the others.
