So what’s your preference? I mostly read stories with male main characters, but not 100% that way.

Depends on the kind of story.

If it’s more of a social story and people behaving badly, female.

if it’s action, male.

Until I hit my early teen years, I avoided female heroes unless they were part of a team, as much as I could because I just didn't want to read "girl's stuff" but since then, it no longer really matters much to me.
If the hero is well-written and not having graphic sex at least once every other chapter just "because" (I'm looking at YOU, Anita Blake), gender, species or level of animation doesn't matter that much as long as the story set-up is interesting, and the writing is not incompetent.

Writing wise, male.

As for reading, I'm not too picky. I used to be really into OI manhwas.

I'm not a big fan of gender-bender stories, though. Most of the time, they're just pure fetish stuff. I read a few serious ones where the main character actually struggles with adjusting and keeping it together, but those are pretty rare.

I’m more into male protagonists to be honest. Sadly, I just haven’t come across many female characters that really stood out. :(

I prefer to write male characters.

But for MCs I read, it depends on what the story is about.
