I’m thinking of writing a Magical Girl story but using the other type of tropes from the era where Magical Girls like Cardcaptor Sakura was its own thing. From what I remember, there is a distinct difference between the tropes of that type of anime/manga compared to ‘Magical Girl teams’.

I just don’t know where to get references other than TV Tropes. There isn’t much analysis videos and the like I know of to help carve out a plan from scratch. Does anyone have any advice on what to focus on?

Like the differences between team-based Magical Girls like Precure and single unit types that are sometimes referred to as witches in supernatural stories (who don’t even have a transformation). Maybe Buffy the Vampire Slayer could be considered one of them considering she is a magical girl who fights off evil herself.

Anyway, despite mentally understanding the difference. Any more comments to further understand the tropes would be helpful. Like if there is a difference in themes and whatnot. My memory of the shows proper is too vague.

I’m looking up references as I write this blog.

Iirc Cardcaptor Sakura is more like pokemon than magical girl.

Yes they both contain a girl cosplaying magical girls and battle mystic things.

But Sakura is literally capturing them and spamming the cards like runescrolls

Magical girl that we know started with Sailor Moon.

The author starts with the concept of Team Super Sentai, Male power ranger/Kamen riders, but with female magical girls. Theyre team-color-coded because Power Ranger are color coded.

Cardcaptor sakura was pretty much just an Independent girl with magical power and a familiar. A typical shoujo girl.

Everyone else is just Ally, Enemies, or Nobody.

Practically she's Tomb Raider.

Basically this. Sakura (Ash/Satoshi) accidentally releases all of the Clow cards (Prof. Oak's pokemon) and then gets given the task of re-capturing all of them by the familiar who's name I forgot (Oak's lab assistant). Then, as a reward for putting them back in the book (PC), all the cards (mon) go from being Clow (Oak's) to Sakura's (Ash's).

That was a really spot on reference. Also...

Her best friend should've been her girlfriend by the end. I know, I know, they were too young for that and blahblahblah. It's kinda spot on, too, though, to say that the friend was super in lesbians with her dumb friend based on how many outfits she made for Sakura and how she did everything she could to be with her for everything. Just like Jupiter and Saturn got dubbed as being "friends" instead of lovers.

I recall the manga.

The first few chapters was the les friend admiring Sakura's brother's ears.

And I thought, ok, crush on big bro.

Then chapters later it was revealed that she liked his ears because they are the same to Sakura's.

I did not know about yuri, it was that chapter that opened my eyes.

Fun fact Pokemon was planning to do a magical girl spin off series with Ash as one of the groups protagonists crossdressing because he was still very integral to the series at the time. It got scrapped and never went beyond the concept stage.
