As the title says. Scene is

The current character is asleep. His friend tries to wake him up by getting his attention with "Psst!"

Just wanted to know the verb for it.

As far as I know there is no verb for psst. The closest you can get is 'a hissing sound' or 'a whispered sound' or 'quietly alert'. Neither of these examples properly reflects the Psst onomatopoeia but they should give you alternatives at least.

No, I only know one nationality that does that gesture. And yeah, I'm a Filipino too.
I'm not Filipino, and I know several cultures that use that.

wake them with an emphasis on silence?

person1 was fast asleep when person2 silently entered the room. with panic in their eyes and hectic movements, person2 looked around, silently closed the door, and while holding a finger to person1's lips shook them awake. (are you talking about this kind of situation?)

I'd probably go with "hissed," but I'd modify it, depending on the situation and its implications: "gently hissed," "carefully hissed," that sort of thing.

I've seen the sound itself used as a verb, although it's always pretty weird when I read it like that. I've also seen "psst" used as a noun instead, which comes off a little more smoothly but is still kinda weird.

I say just treat it as exactly what it is. It's an onomatopoeia. This means you should just put the word "psst" between "quotation marks," *asterixes* or -dashes- and, whichever you use, follow it up with a descriptive phrase. For instance...

"Psst. Psst." she said, trying to bet my attention.

Whisper seemed to work best, hissing sounds a bit more aggressive, imo.

Try 'he/she yeeted an object at him'. Something like that. That's the closest thing I can come up with.

pssted seems perfectly fine, maybe even pssssssted for emphasis.

I mean banged is a thing, boomed is a thing, meowed is a thing, why can't pssted be a thing too?
