Wait, is it not? I feel like every time I see an anime fan, they're talking about Gundums or some variant of them.
Isekai is all the rage nowadays, and full-blown mecha is long ago not as popular. It's popular as a side gig, but stuff like Gundam that is wholly about mecha isn't nearly as popular as simple shounens, harems, or isekai.

I would say you are right about sports. People like watching it, but don't really like reading about it.

Sleep Deprived Elf here with a question for my peers. As Fall approaches and the seasonal dread begins to set in I find myself wanting to write a story that goes against the more popular genres of scribblehub, blasphemy I know. But it got me thinking about what genres authors might consider unpopular and why? I know theres pretty quantifiable proof in terms of numbers but Im curious as to the personal opinions of others.

Why do you think certain genres are unpopular?
NTR

Pure suffering mc(masochist)? Or it those mcs with agonizing challenges
Imagine subaru re:zero

but despite reviving nonstop, he never succeed to save anyone.
and forever alone and end series in despair with the world destroyed.

its rare but this kind of JP wns exist. especially more common, the "despair inducing" NTR ero jp novels on nocturnesyosetu.
--------
author make reader suffer. pure suffering, 0 satisfaction. and even be said to be a sadism that want reader to hurt badly.
177013 is an example.

nonfiction

currently you can't even select it as a genre in sh lol

so basically 0 stories, you can't get more unpopular than this

though arguably you can just tag it slice of life

I have seen very few true Westerns online, anywhere. Closest I've seen recently were Serenity/Firefly fanfics, which is a Western In Spaaaace!

Anything that isnt Isekai or some resurrection trasmutation thing.
The actual answer is horror (it is what i like to write the most).
Horror is hard to write, in this world we got those that wont read horror couse they dont like it at all.
Those that are numb couse they dont believe in anything and those that used to read horror but they have already seen almost averything.
They say mecha is also quite despised (is what im writing right now)

I miss well-written political intrigue in fantasy worlds:blob_teary: Often such stories are too simple, everything is focused on the romantic line

This. I don't think I've seen it in this site, although I haven't really looked for it, to be honest. But usually, the GB male to female shows up without me having to look for it.

Additionally, even non-isekai stories are becoming increasingly rare.
Well, I'm writing a pure female to male story but i can only agree on the unpopular part. But that might be just my subpar writing and the bad synopsis.

I have considered trying to do a pure female to male story but just cannot get into the right mindset. Do have plans for one story to have a female character who earns her living as a male actor - but that's because she inherited her dead dad's shapeshifting powers and plays HIM on a television series... but that is about as close as I can get to that mindset.

Netorare.
Surprised this wasn't the first answer.
Historically inspired interwar period aerial dogfighting stories.
VERY niche. Kinda interesting idea though in a way.

I was Isekai'd into a disembodied foot and now I have to Become a Rockstar in the game Starfield to defeat Dracula.
Not even sure what to say here

Well, for that one it's because Mecha is a very visual genre. You don't watch mecha stories for the plot. You watch them for the massive robots bashing each other and getting torn limb from limb- in a family friendly way. Ah, Sports is the same way, isn't it?
I feel like every time I see an anime fan, they're talking about Evangelion or Gundums or some variant of them.

Am I the only one who knows about the IGPX anime? It was Mecha, but sports.

Dude the day I read someone's day to day diary as a nonfiction novel claiming to be a fictional slice of life novel is the day you can put me in the ground.

The shitty fake A.I. we have now is smarter than me at that point.
