Sleep Deprived Elf here with a question for my peers. As Fall approaches and the seasonal dread begins to set in I find myself wanting to write a story that goes against the more popular genres of scribblehub, blasphemy I know. But it got me thinking about what genres authors might consider unpopular and why? I know theres pretty quantifiable proof in terms of numbers but Im curious as to the personal opinions of others.

Why do you think certain genres are unpopular?

Martial arts if it's not about cultivation, magic, wuxia or similar things. Think of either Baki, Hajime no Ippo, or Karate Kohinata Minoru. This is not popular. Sports if it's not some kind of VR thing is unpopular. Mecha if it's not just a side thing. That would be the unpopular genres on SH.

As a bonus, I will throw in a tag. Pure female to male is super unpopular.

This. I don't think I've seen it in this site, although I haven't really looked for it, to be honest. But usually, the GB male to female shows up without me having to look for it.

Additionally, even non-isekai stories are becoming increasingly rare.
There is, but it is around 20 stories, the most popular one having 50k views or something.

Well I imagine that has to do with the viewer base of SH. There arent many popular pure romance stories either as far as I know, always has to be some form of fantasy story as well.

By pure romance you mean stuff like Horimiya, Kaguya, and so on? Also yes. Fantasy is the most popular genre here.

Horimiya is a perfect example to be honest. I know slice of life romance doesn't translate to a purely written medium though so it's not surprising.

Im much more surprised some of the bigger themes arent as popular as normal fantasy. I know its massively influenced by popular culture and by extension anime culture, but stuff like sci fi or mystery thrillers are popular in western media. Its strange that it doesnt translate to webserials often.

I'd say it would be something like history or sports. I really wouldn't know though because I filtered out a lot of genres.

I am not sure, but I think sci fi does better on RR. SH is heavily influenced by anime, manga, and web\light novel lovers. And those are usually fantasy, at least recent ones.

'Silent Tragedy'

I rarely see people write this way anymore; stories that are deeply tragic in ways that don't need narrative emphasis, and so the emphasis can go to something else.

Like Overlord

There's a lot of examples being given but no reasons... :blob_frown:

Well, someone did say, SH is the sister site of NovelUpdates, so there's a lot of crossover with people who read translated works. So anime style genres and stories should be much more successful- but then, mecha isn't very popular is it?

Well, for that one it's because Mecha is a very visual genre. You don't watch mecha stories for the plot. You watch them for the massive robots bashing each other and getting torn limb from limb- in a family friendly way. Ah, Sports is the same way, isn't it?

Horror, Tragedy and all those are unpopular because Web Novels are read for escapism rather than catharsis. At least, that's my reason for disliking them. Considering how many people say they like those genres, I can only shrug it off as weird when nobody else reads them.

Mystery is unpopular, because half the audience for mysteries just skips to the end of the book. In web novels, there is no end of the book. It's a perplexing problem, no? A good mystery requires careful set up and time investment to try and figure out what's going- and they already stopped reading, didn't they? No patience...

Josei is also somewhat rare. I'd wonder if Seinan is rare too, but I think some people just treat it as a fancy word for the Adult, Mature, Smut categories. Technically the two are about "Growing Up", which is already a bad start for people who are reading web novels instead of getting taxed like good little social cogs. But then, a majority of readers are male, and don't relate to the problems a Josei story presents- or actively reproach such stories as whiny or feminist.

That's all for now.

Mecha manga and anime isn't popular either.
Wait, is it not? I feel like every time I see an anime fan, they're talking about Evangelion or Gundums or some variant of them.
