Do people read stuff with tragedy flags?

I'm curious what you think on this, particularly Isekai fantasy stuff with tragedy flag and/or with harem flags?

I was thinking I like a story to sound very logical and not comedy. I started to think like some stories lose believability if too many things are cliche or comedy... and then that makes you want to make the story sound more serious. And in serious stories sometimes some characters die.

What do you think?

Yes-nya there are some like that who enjoy tragedy. But keeping to to excessive will make it to heavy that would make it difficult to continue reading.

I mean... if it's that heavy, wouldn't it be just the way YOU like it?

I wouldn't go looking to a tragedy tag, but I wouldn't avoid it either.

as for the Harem flag... hell it is used quite a bit, even in non R-18 works.

In fact, all three of my works have that tag, though only one has reached the point it could be considered a harem. (The other two will get there, takes time to collect the Pokémon you know)

Some people like tragedy, I really don't as I feel it makes the story feel more "worthless" in a sense. Not that it is, but when I'm worried about whether characters I enjoy reading about are gonna disappear, I don't want to and don't get as attached. This is of course not what every reader thinks, but is how I feel. I just avoid reading those stories. (Tag your work correctly pls authors)

Really it depends on wheter or not I'm interested in all the terrible happenings, if sad thing after sad thing stacks without any breathing room to leave a sliver of hope, then I just legit get bored. You need to have some good happen in order to crush that hope later with despair.

Depend how much you would go for that tragedy. If it's just once in a while then it's ok, or just subplot so the mc could shine (become hero and save the day), you can remove it since it's just subplot/subgenre.

but if it's tragedy with tragedy altogether (typical grimdark fantasy) then it would be hard to feel attach to it, since all we see are despair and despair, maybe use a tiny spark of hope, but it mostly only work for hardcore grimdark fan. Typically, you would want it to pair with a little comedy to reduce pressure. (Shadow slave vol 1 in the nutshell)

My story has the Tragedy tag and it seems to have a small but pretty dedicated audience. It all depends on the person and what they are looking for.

If your story focuses on tragedy, then give it the tragedy genre. However, if the tragedy only serves as a setting for the characters, then simply tag it with a tragic past.

Personally, When I'm in the mood for it I would actually actively search for stories with heavy emphasis on tragedy.

However, I HATE harem, holy shesh dude for some reason good stories just get nuked in my head whenever harem comes into play. I have not found a single harem novel that I enjoy until the end.

I mean, Romeo and Juliet is a tragedy so...

Personally, I will read tragedy but it all depends on what the tragedy actually is. I mean, I like downer stories but I probably won't read it if it's tragedy to the point of being emotional torture porn. I learned my lesson after reading the Golden Forest where they decided to double down on the tragedy part for like 10 chapters of the guy mourning his dead wife. She gets better. I just can't handle prolonged tragedy. Or ones involving the death of a child that was an actually developed character instead of random shock value.

I write and read them, though I don't actively seek out the genre/tag when searching stories even when I may have it selected.

I prefer not to read Tragedy. We already have that in real life.
harem flags
I'd prefer harem, in theory, but in reality I never find any that I want to read. I guess I'm just picky.

Tragedy doesn't make a story more serious, nor does it conflict with comedy. Rather, comedy and tragedy almost always mix together if the tragedy is done well.
It's also entirely possible to make a serious, non-tragic story. It might be rather disconnected from reality, but that's only a boon from my perspective.

Is some peoples' rejection of harem , becaus the girls seem to be gained too easy? I'm curious to hear why you don't like it to improve? Or is it because they all seem too similar to each other? Like for example a lot of people have spoke up saying they don't like xianxia novels, but most of that comes from the fact that most of those are both too similar to each other with no plot variation, and also they make the MCs a bit too cruel.

I keep seeing this thread title as "Trendy Flag Usage" ...
Which might include harem.
I;ve never read harem stories but the main complaints I've seen is that there's never any reason the reader can see for all these girls to fall for the bland MC, who often comes across as a wish-fulfillment self-insert of the author. That and there are usually only two or three well-developed characters (often two harem members AFAICT), and all the rest are window dressing with a trait the MC needs to use at some point.

1. I don't really enjoy the concept of more than one partner, since it really breaks the goodwill between me and the characters, especially the mc
2. Yes, seems like it's a bit too easy considering they already have a partner. It makes the romance practically non-existent in my book
3. Nope, usually it's not because they're too similar.
