You are definitely not alone.

As to how you deal with it? This is something unique to you. Writing the idea down might do it. Integrate it into some other project can do it. Or just log it away for another day and hope you can ignore it.

It is a thing that a lot of us deal with. For me, I tend to integrate everything I need to into one package and if I cant I bury the new idea and hope it goes away.

Am I the only person who starts a new story in their head as soon as they commit to writing a specific one? If not how do you deal with this?
No you are not. Just don’t be paralyzed by your ideas and write a brief summary of your new story idea before going back to the old one.

I like that idea. what I do is start a google doc and write down all the stuff that comes to mind and then I try to switch back. most of the time that's fine but sometimes that idea becomes my new WIP lol

Then just chip away at that new WIP until you finish the older story, then repeat.

This is a sign that you were meant to tell stories. Many of them which you need to put together. But the thing is, you need to train yourself to have patience with yourself.

Its okay to dream about other stories as long as you can still focus on one and consistently write it to the end of the story. It comes down to the word Wrath said.

Now, if you can handle it, you can write both but if thats too much for you, just have one main focus.

Thats a journey that I've been on for a long time.

Nope

One that actually got feedback HAD my focus until two others that might make actual money stepped up... but I have about ten ongoing stories, five of them posted online in varying lengths, scattered around here.

Heh. I think it was in my blood all along. Dad's dad was a storyteller in every sense of the word (dad never realized how many of his stories were untrue until his older sister showed him the joke book he got one of them from - but he always enjoyed just listening to him tell stories, even if he never again believed any of them that he could not immediately verify). From him I got my first name, from the family who adopted him after his parents died, I got my family name, and from mom's dad I got my crappy health, dislike of eating healthy, and middle name... :D

No, I do it quite a bit. I'll think of a character and want to explore that character a bunch more. Typically the phase passes, but on occasion I'll follow through and get my base idea down and keep focus on on main story.
