Q1. How do ya'll keep track of the stats, level and skills?

My AN: I know I do it by keeping it on my google doc

Q2: How do you know what is reasonable when it comes to increasing the level or stats?

My AN: I just do it little by little or by lot depending on the situation.

Demand 1: If you are writing a LitRPG currently, paste the status screen of your MC currently. No context or anything, just paste it.
(I'll also read your novel so you can paste the link too)

In the spoiler is my MC's stats in 'The Deity Entertainment Network'

I keep track of them by looking at the last time he visited DEN to powerup

For my other main work MFGR I was using Excel and pasting links from IMGUR or other sharing sites but I was getting complaints that those sharing sites were blocked in some countries and my readers couldnt see the stats. Since the MC and side characters all have stats, I started doing it like this there as well and just didn't show it often.

Edit- I write smut so there is smut related skills in the spoiler

I have my levels/stats written both on the glossary section of my story, as well as on a notepad. To answer your second question... whenever I feel it's necessary.

I'm only a reader but
1. Microsoft Excel spreadsheets
1. You either go insane trying to crunch numbers like some authors I know, don't put focus on the stats and barely if ever reveal them or just put random bullshit that seems reasonable and hope the number autists don't find out and correct you in the comments.

I have his character sheet from after about his third power up on file. Beyond that I just wing it. Probably do need to go back and revise it to a spreadsheet because I've forgotten some of the increases - but most of it I can search for pretty easily, like his current ranks in Riding or Survival.
Then again, I used a heavily modified version of an existing RPG to create his stats (except the game used a 3-18 starting stat range with an upper limit of 20 and the setting uses 5-20 for starting stats with no upper limit)

1) The system that I designed for mine actually mitigates the bloat within its simplistic execution, despite seeming to be exceptionally complex on paper, and the stories themselves don't make a big deal out of the stats themselves. In that system, level itself is mutable, but hard-capped at either 20 (base classes) or 40 (advanced classes). Attributes are also capped at 50/100 based There are a few exceptions to this rule (The Sixteen Elder Dragons), so there really isn't much to keep track of beyond what spells/powers/techniques a character knows -vs- those they have access to, and those that the skills the know -vs- those they have equipped, and their equipment as well as what it does for them.

For tracking character power scale, I use a dual-rank system and it has a number of tiers, as well as what is necessary to achieve the next tier, where characters of any given rank are roughly equivalent in capability, but the gap between the tiers is substantial, so it is an effective gauge of how powerful a character is within the world.

2) As for the how, I keep track with the collection of notebooks that I have, for all of the skills and abilities that any given character has, and the range of those abilities, or what they do, within the scope of the story itself. If it doesn't matter to the narrative, it doesn't get included in-line. So for the most part I keep the stat sheets OUT of the narrative as much as possible, and instead include only the relevant stats from the perspective of one (or more) of the characters themselves with regards to what they can personally observe.
For the readers, I provided the blank character sheet, and my post-chapter notes along with the Full Character Details chapter (glossary entries are character limit capped at 6,000 and not sufficient for the full character details) if I need to make a quick reference to something in a character's stats, abilities, or the like.

The system itself utilizes a functional system of "Builds" that the characters can create themselves out of their "skills", "class", "equipment", and "abilities" (such as spells, techniques, runes, or other things a character can do).

The Elarian Chronicles - LitRPG/Isekai - This is one of the two novels that utilize the system.
Aethara: The King's Path - This is the other novel that utilizes the system.
Blank Character Status Screen (Reference) - There's no character details filled in here.

Below are the basics of the system that I designed for the setting (Elaria specifically), and are referenced directly within the stories that use this setting. That said, I do need to do one more update to the Black Character Status Screen to include a section for Racial/Ancestral Traits and abilities (which the characters also gain or improve periodically as they grow) for anyone that might feel inclined to browse.

My LitRPG system utilizes a Dual-Ranking system, that consists of a Grade (1 - 5 Stars) and a Tier (Bronze, Silver, Gold, Ascendant), and it is a quick way to gauge how much power a character possesses without delving into the nitty-gritty details or comparing stats and abilities.

First, the tiers. They should be reasonably self-explanatory, but among them Bronze is the lowest tier, and Ascendant is the highest. Progress goes from lowest (Grade 1) to the highest (Grade 5) within a tier before advancing to the next higher tier at Grade 1, so what follows is the breakdown of the different ranks in the system.

Bronze-1: This is basically the average person. Nothing super special or powerful about them. Typically Level 1 - 5 for any of the Base Classes is where you'd expect a character at this rank to be. This is the base rank for anyone in the world.
Bronze-2: This is slightly above-average for a human. Either a single exceptional (EX) skill, or a culmination of skills and abilities can rank the character up. On average, Level 10 or higher on a single Base Class will net you Bronze-2.
Bronze-3: Obtain the Mastery skill of a single Base-Class, or the Signature Skills of three different classes.
Bronze-4: More than half the attributes of the character have reached 30. They have unlocked up to Tier VI spells or techniques, have mastered three skills, from any combination of two or more classes, or have taken their first Advanced Class. This rank requires the Attributes and either an Advanced Class, or advanced Base-Class mastery (as noted).
Bronze-5: One or more attributes have reached the soft-max for Base Classes (50), or the character has achieved Rank B in the primary (specialized) skill of any Advanced Class. Alternatively, a character who has achieved a significant / noteworthy accomplishment and does not already qualify, ranks-up to Bronze-5.

Silver-1: A character who has mastered three or more base classes automatically ranks up to Silver-1 Additionally, mastering a single Advanced class, ranks the character up to Silver-1 [Mastery of a class is achieved by obtaining the class's pinnacle skill at it's max level.]
Silver-2: Improve an Advanced Class's Signature Skill to Extraordinary (EX) Rank.
Silver-3: Learn the Signature Skills of three different Advanced Classes or bring Two Advanced Class Signature Skills to Rank A.
Silver-4: Master Two Advanced Classes (Gain the Mastery Skills of Two Advanced Classes)
Silver-5: Bring an Advanced Class's Mastery Skill to Rank A or higher.

Gold-1: Master Three Advanced Classes, and Bring One Advanced Class's Mastery Skill to Rank S or higher
Gold-2: While Three (or more) Advanced Classes are mastered, bring a second Advanced Class Mastery Skill to Rank S or higher.
Gold-3: Unlock Five or more Tier 10 Spells or Techniques and Master a fourth Advanced Class.
Gold-4: While four or more Advanced Classes are Mastered, bring a Third Mastery Skill to Rank S or higher.
Gold-5: Accomplish a Legendary Feat, Master Five Different Advanced Classes, Raise Three Signature Advanced Class Skills to Extraordinary (EX rank), Raise a fourth Advanced Class Mastery Skill to Rank S or higher.

Ascendant-1: Unlock the Skill - Limit-breaker.
Ascendant-2: Create a Divine Domain
Ascendant-3: Gain 10,000 Believers/Followers and create an Avatar.
Ascendant-4: Gain 100,000 Believers/Followers, and Expand your Divine Domain five times.
Ascendant-5: Gain 1,000,000 Believers/Followers, and Expand your Divine Domain 50 times.

In my LitRPG system, Classes are divided into two primarily types. Base Classes, and Advanced Classes. Each also has its own rules for obtaining it. Additionally, there are two 'Special' Base Classes that serve as the starting point for all people in the world. Commoner and Noble. A common citizen is either one, or the other initially. Typically inherited.

The LitRPG mechanics of this system are broken down structurally speaking, where each class does possess its own basic requirements to enter into under the Class-Change Mechanics, simplified by the use of a Crest-System, but they have not yet been fully fleshed out. If you are curious about any classes in particular, or what they do, feel free to ask in the meantime.

Below, are the corresponding class lists. None are intended to be complete and exhaustive, but rather, to represent the most common options within each category.

In order to advance to a Specialized Base Class, someone with a General Base Class must be level 5 and register as an Adventurer at one of the local Adventurer's Guilds, as well as possessing a minimum aptitude for their desired specialization.

Alternatively, reaching level 10 in the General Base Class and using the appropriate Crest item (readily available at all Adventurer's Guild Halls) will allow the individual to assume the specialized base class.

Changing Classes

As I hinted at earlier, there are multiple ways for a character to change classes from one class to another. Most typically undergo their first class-change when they become an Adventurer, going from either Commoner or Noble to one of the specialized Base Classes using the specialized Adventurer's Crest item that allows them to assume any other Base Class they meet the requisites for regardless of their level.

When a character takes on a new class, their level is reset to 1, in that class.
Additionally, they lose any Class-Bonuses to their Attributes from the old class, and gain the Class Bonus attributes of their new class.

They retain any Skills learned and gained from their previous class(es), and gain the 1st-level skill of their new class, but can only use the skills of their new class unless they have the 'Class Mastery' skill of a previous class equipped in one of their skill slots. (Will be detailed in the Character Status Sheet notes).

A character's attributes do not change beyond the above noted adjustment when changing classes excepting in if their current attributes are above the class maximum for that attribute. In this scenario, their attributes are effectively reduced to the maximum of their class.

In order to obtain a new class, a character MUST use the appropriate Crest Item for that class, and using one such item requires a minimum of Level 10 in their current class unless that Crest item has a higher requirement.

The Crest Items
  • Adventurer's Crest - Requires Level 5 - Granted by Adventurer's Guild to Commoners and Nobles upon registering as Adventurers.
  • 'Class' Crest - Requires Level 10 & Class-Specific Requisites - For every class, there is a crest to allow characters to obtain that class, and all of the above listed classes are included in this 'Class' crest. (IE: Brigand's Crest, Mercenary's Crest, etc etc etc).
  • Hero's Crest - Requires Level 15 in the current class - Allows the user to advance into ANY Martial Advanced Class, regardless of current class. Highly sought after.
  • Arcanist's Crest - Requires Level 15 - Functions as the Hero's Crest, except for Mage classes. A character using this can assume any mage class regardless of their current class.
  • Grand Crest - Requires Level 20 - A Legendary Crest - This mythic item is not consumed by its use, and allows its user to change their class into ANY class, overriding all other class and level requisites.
  • Lord's Crest - Requires Level 20 & Noble Class - Advance into the appropriate 'Lord' Class. (May also advance into Dark Lord class)
  • King's Crest - Requires Level 20 & Lord Class - Advance into the appropriate 'King' Class. (May also advance into Dread Emperor Class)

The Level System employed here is the primary means of tracking advancement and growth within the setting of Elaria, but the level of a character itself does not often track their overall power within the setting, only their current state of advancement within their current class. This is because whenever a new class is taken, the character's level is reset to 1, allowing them to once more grow within their class. However, their stats remain unchanged after the reset.

The Level Cap
While the hard-cap to a character's level is theoretically limitless, the classes all have a soft-cap on their advancement, as noted below.
  • Base Classes - No Base Class may be advanced above Level 20
  • Advanced Classes - No Advanced Class may be advanced above Level 40
Level Increases are earned with every 1000 Experience Points (XP), however I will not be incorporating this directly into the stats-system utilized in my story, as it would detract too much from the narrative itself to do so, instead, at the conclusion of each chapter, I will include Author's notes to update the various levels of the characters involved in the chapter.

Improving Attributes
As a part of the level-up system, characters also gain a total of 3 attribute points to use to increase their attributes each time they gain one level, up to the maximum of their given class. The following attribute maximums do not apply to Health and Mana. Those stats are capped separately, and each point invested in them during level increase improves them by ten.
  • Base Classes - Have a General Attribute Maximum of 50
  • Advanced Classes - Have a General Attribute Maximum of 100
After reaching the maximum in all available attributes, additional attribute points that would be gained are instead converted into Ability Points which can be used to improve, enhance, or learn additional abilities (Skills, Techniques, Spells, Powers, Runes, etc etc etc).

Gaining Skills
Additionally, whenever the character attains the appropriate level, they gain one of the skills of their choice associated with their current class. Any Mage Class gains an additional spell at every level in their class as well, but must meet the level requirement to learn that spell. (Specifically Detailed in the Class Details Notes in a separate chapter).

Base Classes
  • 1st Level - Gain Class-Entry Skill (Specialty Skill)
  • 3rd Level - Character Choice
  • 5th Level - Character Choice
  • 7th Level - Character Choice
  • 9th Level - Character Choice
  • 11th Level - Character Choice
  • 13th Level - Character Choice
  • 15th Level - Character Choice
  • 17th Level - Character Choice
  • 19th Level - Character Choice
  • 20th Level - Gain Class-Mastery Skill

Advanced Classes
  • 1st Level - Gain Class Entry Skill (Specialty Skill)
  • 5th Level - Character Choice
  • 10th Level - Character Choice
  • 15th Level - Character Choice
  • 20th Level - Character Choice
  • 25th Level - Character Choice
  • 30th Level - Character Choice

Honestly, writing LitRPG isn't really my genre. But I wanted to try it since I've been listening to the concept a lot.

I'm mostly into paranormal/Supernatural, Mystery, Sci-fi, Alternative History, Urban Fantasy, and Steampunk.
