To authors who write RPG-style stories: I have a question.

Writers of SH. I want to thank all of you for your input. I guess I need to start reading better RPG because you all gave me some good ideas. Everything from the personal code of the protagonist to how his world works, good ideas. Now, about you people who mentioned Batman. Don't get me started with that guy, and I'm about to say some stuff you've heard before. He's cool as shit, but that speech he gave to Jason, you know, under the red hood. I swear, if I could become a murder hobo I would dedicate myself to tracking him down, killing him, and resurrecting him over and over. That was such a dumb explanation. It was said coolly, but it was so fucked up.

Not every Batman is the same. As an example, the early Batman actually did kill criminals without hesitation.

Diminish the experience gained from every kill so that the time/energy/resource/risk isn't worth the experience.

He even carried guns (though DC quickly realized that made him too similar to the pulp hero The Black Bat, who debuted about a week before Batman but in print media, and then came up with a rationale for him to never use them and it became a part of the character that he WON'T) in three stories between his first two issues.

Well, you could try my work, The Deity Entertainment Network. It does have smut, but it is labelled, and if any significant story happens during those scenes other than some relationship-building, I usually include a summary at the bottom. It isn't the focus of my story at all; usually, only one scene every 25k-50k words or more. It is more like a Light Novel that doesn't fade to black during those scenes.

John's motivation is more about saving people and relationship-building with the intent of starting a family again, all while on this game show for these gooner- I mean gods of culture. He is an old man and can go quite dark at times, becoming the murder hobo, but that is usually in response to a situation instead of to just grind XP. Usually, he is just an affable old guy who likes to have drinks, play cards, heal people, and grow stronger.

He forms bonds of love with all his enemies, building both a harem and a kingdom.

This is pretty interesting.
Maybe I’ll try writing it myself when I have some free time.

I mean...you technically don't have to (keep your protagonist from turning into a straight-up murdering hobo)?

This could actually be interesting.

MC kills a random dude for [reason] and gains [reward: think squid game]

Then the tension becomes literally that: how to fight the urge to become a murderer hobo

I would never make it. EXP is the reason why I always go to the evil side in games. Given that it is a game and is obligated to go into a specific ending (especially with those false multiple endings where everything is the same until the last moment), means that not only do you tend to fight the regular mobs but, the evil ones trying to betray you too.
